Judy, The information for marriages in the Justice of the Peace system is online here: http://nutrias.org/info/louinfo/louinfo2.htm Justice of the Peace marriage records cost $3.00. Send to the address noted above: Louisiana Division/City Archives New Orleans Public Library 219 Loyola Ave. New Orleans, LA 70112 A small part of the JP index is online here: http://nutrias.org/inv/jpmarrindex/jpmarrindex.htm Other marriage records (1870 to about 1957) can be obtained from the Louisiana State Archives for $5.00. See: http://www.sos.louisiana.gov/Home/Archives/ResearchLibrary/VitalRecords/OrleansParishMarriages/tabid/633/Default.aspx Follow the directions found on the website. These marriage records are also available on microfilm through any Family History Center, but since the loan fee is now $5.50 per roll, ordering a copy through the NOPL or the Louisiana State Archives is now less expensive. If you just have one or two you want to try, you might ask the list if someone going to the State Archives will look up and copy a couple for you at a lower cost. Reminder to all: The Louisiana Genealogical & Historical Society is holding its Annual Seminar on Saturday, April 26th at the Embassy Suites in Baton Rouge. The speakers are Claire Bettag and Augusta Elmwood. Claire is giving three presentations: Assumptions in Genealogical Research: Your Own Worst Enemy NARA Records and Information at Your Fingertips -- How to Take Advantage of NARA Resources From Home Concepts of Civil Law and Genealogical Records Augusta will speak on The French Colony of Saint-Domingue There will be numerous book vendors and societies on hand to display their publications. Claitor's Publishing, which recently purchased Hebert Publications, will be among them. I just spoke with Bob Claitor and he told me some very interesting plans that he is eager to share with the attendees. Le Comite' des Archives also has a new book to debut. If any of this piques your curiosity, come to the seminar and hear all about it. For more details, see http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~la-lghs/seminar.htm Judy Riffel Baton Rouge
Judy, Good work on finding those two marriages. Too bad that neither one helps us to know Catherina's last name. I don't know what that name is supposed to be. (By the way, Hermann Dinkgreve and Amelia Gullung were married by my grandfather, who was pastor of St. Paul for many years.) I also checked for all the other marriages and couldn't find any either. Perhaps the civil marriage records will be more helpful, or the baptism records, if these can be found. Norm, I found a marriage for 1 of the sons Andrew Gullung who married Marie Schultz on 1-7-1886. Page 168 No. 2208. I could not read Catherina's last name. Also found a daughter Amella M.M. Gullung who married Herman D. Dinkgreve on 10-23-1901 page 273.There was no last name for Catherina. I have all the marriage dates for the children. But these are the only ones that I could find in the records. Maybe you will have better luck in reading her last name. Judy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Norm Hellmers" <n_d_hellmers@yahoo.com> To: <laorlean@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 15, 2008 6:35 PM Subject: Re: [LAORLEAN] Jakob Gullung and wife Catherine Judy, This is what we have so far on the place from which your Katharina S_______ Gullung came: http://home.comcast.net/~hellmers/german2/ I've presented the problem to the Germany mailing list and they are offering some interesting ideas and assistance. Stay tuned. In the meantime, we have the issue of Katharina's maiden name. I believe this puzzle demonstrates the importance of researching siblings. With the Gullungs having so many children, the records of their marriages and deaths could be pursued for a correct spelling of Katharina's last name. Some of the later death records include the full names of the parents, perhaps Andrew Henry Gullung's (28 Dec 1934) might have her name. It appears to me, after searching the St. Paul baptism records, that the Gullung children were not baptized there. I learned that Zinsweiler, Alsace, only had a Catholic parish, so perhaps Jakob was Catholic and his wife Katharina was Lutheran/Protestant, so they could be married at St. Paul, but their children would be baptized at a Catholic church. Do you have any information about their religion(s)? Given where they were living in the 9th ward and having a German background, perhaps the children were baptized at Holy Trinity. Holy Trinity has been closed for some time and the records are at the Archdiocesan Archives. Some of the baptism records were indexed in NEW ORLEANS GENESIS. See: http://freepages.religions.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~neworleans/german_church_records/08.html Beginning in 1965 these records were serialized. Search on Holy Trinity here for the various volumes: http://files.usgwarchives.org/la/orleans/newspapers/001-165.txt Perhaps you could ask the list for someone who has access to the old volumes of NOG to see if the Gullungs show up in the Holy Trinity baptism records. If so, you could ask for one from the Archdiocesan Archives to see if the mother's name is included. Some baptism records I have from Holy Trinity from around that time period (1859-1879) include the mother's maiden name and the names of the sponsors. Do you have a death record or obituary for Katharina? Depending on when she died, there might be an obituary in the German newspaper, the Tägliche Deutsche Zeitung. These occasionally give the decedent's specific place of origin. Just thoughts for your further research. Norm --- Judy Fisher <jzamboni@cox.net> wrote: > Thanks Norm. I have a list called Second District Court Register of Naturalizations-Volume 7. It lists the person's name and a Page No. Is there any way to get that actual entry or page? Would someone tell me how to do that? Thanks, Cheramie
