    2. http://www.state.lib.la.us/whatsnew/whatsnew_details.cfm?doc_id=525 Louisiana Works Progress Administration (WPA) Collection The State Library of Louisiana has begun to digitize and provide electronic access to important Louisiana historical WPA material not previously available online.  Louisiana WPA materials were placed in the custody of the State Library when the national WPA was terminated in June of 1943. The collection has since remained, more or less in storage, and in large degree inaccessible. The materials include both text and photographs. The staff of the Federal Writers Project transcribed newspapers, conducted oral interviews and compiled histories. The text material includes traditional songs, beliefs, customs, sayings, stories, recipes, legends, jokes, and accounts of local history.   WPA photographers documented a considerable amount of the agency's varied activities throughout the state, such as urban and suburban lifestyles and construction projects. The Louisiana Gumbo Project was made possible by a $470,000 National Leadership Grant for Libraries, awarded to the State Library along with the State Museum and the Historic New Orleans Collection. As part of the Louisiana Gumbo Project, this WPA collection will eventually include 10,000 photographs and 2,000 documents. 3. Are there any plans to digitize this work so that in the future it could be searchable? My ancestors were French (Creole) Catholics, owned a barber shop and model shop. Made models for architects, repaired opera glasses and nautical equipment, wrote music and traveled to Cuba and France. Some were firemen, were on the Mardi Gras committee, members of Knights of Pythias, etc. I saw a lot of files in your list that I'd list to peruse! Wish I lived closer. 1. [LAORLEAN] A Note from Bill Stafford
    2. LIST: Unfortunately, although a wonderful resource, I unsubscribed from this listserve years back as I can not devote the time to answer all queries, yet I do have many friends and fellow genealogist that use the site, one of which was kind enough to post this for me. First, I'd like to thank Ms. Riffel for a good assessment of how the vital records were originally index and for giving me an opportunity to respond. It seems that some are confused in regard to our new online vital records index. First, we do not intend nor are in competition with any "paid subscription" genealogical websites, yet in the spirit of public service we would like to give our patrons a wonderful tool for free online. The fact is that our vital records online index is not fully operational nor have we publicized such. There will be times when we have to take the site offline to load more data and to "fine tune" the site which was created entirely by our I.T. staff at the Louisiana State Archives, which was quite a feat in itself as they run the Computer Section of the entire Secretary of State Department. Yet we felt that as it is being fine tuned we would allow patrons to "test drive" it as it currently contains over 1.3 million vital records indices, most of which were never available online before. We are currently working on getting all of our indices online in cooperation with the N.O.V.A. Genweb Index Project which has many created many online vital records indices from the 1800s. If you are not familiar with the work of this group, they are a wonderful group of volunteers around the world, many whom have ancestry in Orleans Parish, who for years have graciously devoted their time and effort in a cooperative effort with the Louisiana State Archives Research Library in entering into electronic form our public vital records indices to put online for patrons around the world at the Orleans Parish NOVA webpage via GenWeb. We thank you for your patience as this is the most ambitious and useful online genealogical tool we have ever created to serve our patrons. And although there is no "wild card" search per say, our advance search does have capabilities that are unavailable on many other genealogical websites, especially ones that are "free" to the public for which most are not. And please note, any paid website must get their information second hand as we house the originals; therefore we feel that we are the "authority" on public vital records in Louisiana as we are the only true record custodians of the originals regardless of what any paid website may advertise. One more positive note about our online index, thanks to our diligent staff and NOVA volunteers, many errors from the original indexes have been found and corrected on our website as they have been painstakingly manually entered some from the indices and many directly from the original records over several years as we house and continue to receive the public vital records. We welcome your input, comments and criticisms, and again thank you for your patience in this regard. Please call me or my staff at the Archives if you have any issues with our website and feel free to contact me directly in regard to any other questions regarding the public vital records of Louisiana. Thank You, Bill Stafford Director of Reference Services Louisiana Secretary of State Archives Division Phone (225)922-1196 email:bstafford@sos.louisiana.gov _www.sos.louisiana.gov_ (http://www.sos.louisiana.gov/) _www.geauxvote.com_ (http://www.geauxvote.com/) -----Original Message----- From: Judy Riffel [mailto:riffelj@bellsouth.net] Sent: Saturday, May 10, 2008 8:37 AM To: laorlean@rootsweb.com Cc: Bill Stafford Subject: Re: [LAORLEAN] LA Archives, Search Vital Records Norm: There is no simple answer to the question at to how the Archives' index to the vital records was created. They started out with the printed indexes created and sent to them by Vital Records Registry. These are what the NOVA people and Ancestry input from. At some point, I'm not certain of the date, the Archives started indexing the vital records directly from the certificates as they received them from Vital Records. Now, every year when they get a new batch, they index them from scratch. So, there may be some discrepancies with the printed indexes that are available in the Research Room as of whatever that date was. The Louisiana Statewide Death index on microfilm in the Research Room goes up to 1959 even though the Archives has only received deaths through 1957 so far. There's also an Orleans Birth Index through 1914 even though they currently have births only through 1907. [As a side note, there is a little known collection of Statewide and Orleans Death Indexes on microfilm at the Louisiana State Library that goes through 1974. I use this frequently when doing research for heir searching companies.] Added to the Louisiana Death Index is a group of nearly 600 "delayed" deaths. Some of these date back to the 1800s. So the statement that the Louisiana Deaths begin in 1911 is not entirely correct (Note that I say "correct," not "true" because I would never imply that they are lying). Also, the earliest Louisiana Statewide Death is dated 1900, not 1911, and the earliest Orleans Birth is dated 1790 (a delayed recording). I have copied Bill Stafford on my response because he does not subscribe to this list. If he wants, he can post the "official" response. 1. [LAORLEAN] preservation grants

    3. Five historic N.O. sites to receive grants today Posted by mcarr May 13, 2008 07:33AM The National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express will award $400,000 in grants today to five historic New Orleans sites. All five sites are run by nonprofits. They must complete repairs within a year. The initiative, called Partners in Preservation, was announced last month with a focus on historic New Orleans sites that are "community-gathering spaces." The awards committee considered each building's importance to its neighborhood, through stories told on the Web. One of the online entries came from Rogerwene Washington, a lifelong member of St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church and a sister of its pastor, the Rev. Otto W. Duncan Jr. As a child, Washington recalled, she'd sat in a pew counting the 60 bulbs that light the iconic "God is Love" sign hanging over the church's pulpit. In another Web entry, Arianne Rumley-Moore called St. James a "very important place in my heart." When she was young, the church -- where she was baptized and married -- had paid for her piano lessons and bought her college textbooks. "If I had attended another church, my life would not have been the same," she wrote. The biggest preservation award went to that beloved church, a Gothic structure on North Roman Street a few blocks from Canal Street. The church, built in 1844 by free people of color, received $100,000 to repair the pressed-tin ceiling and plaster walls of the sanctuary, which has been unusable since Hurricane Katrina, mostly because of a gaping hole in its roof, left by a steeple that toppled during the storm. The congregation returned in December 2005 and has held services in its fellowship hall since then, even though it had no electricity for nearly a year, Duncan said. Two other grants also went to churches. The St. Alphonsus Art & Cultural Center, a Renaissance Revival building in the Lower Garden District, secured $80,000 to restore its front portico, built in 1891. The St. Augustine Parish Hall, built in 1869 in Treme, will receive $75,000 to repair its storm-damaged roof and a rotted and termite-damaged second-floor balcony. On the project's Web site, a longtime parishioner remembered neighbors dancing, playing bingo and hearing music within St. Augustine's building, which he called "a touchstone of Treme." The Odyssey House Louisiana, a social service and health care agency in the Esplanade Ridge neighborhood, also got $75,000 to repair its windows and shutters. The agency's pair of connected brick buildings have been serving the city since 1866, when Thomy Lafon, an early African-American philanthropist, financed an orphanage there for children who'd lost parents during the Civil War. The last grant went to Save Our Cemeteries, which received $70,000 for Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, a burial spot in the Garden District established in 1833. The nonprofit plans to stabilize the cemetery's whitewashed vaults and walls and install a drainage system. Several people had advocated online for the cemetery, listing the prominent citizens laid to rest there and movies filmed within it. Louise, a New Orleans resident, asked that the project finance repairs to Lafayette No. 1 for more personal reasons. "A visit to the family tomb there makes me feel close to my dear grandparents and great-grandmother," she wrote. . . . . . . . To get a copy of the actual documents from the Notre Dame Archives, write to William Kevin Cawley, Ph.D., Archivist and Curator of Manuscripts, Archives of the University of Notre Dame. at archives@nd.edu. The website for the Notre Dame Archives will tell you how much you need to pay per page for the documents. I sent off my check and received the originals, in French of course, within a short time. Although the staff at the Archdiocesan Archives of New Orleans are wonderful people, especially my friend Jack Belsom, they don't have anything to do with the Notre Dame Archives in Indiana, and they won't be able to help you. 1. Re: [LAORLEAN] LA Archives, Search Vital Records
    2. Judy Riffel
    3. Norm: There is no simple answer to the question at to how the Archives' index to the vital records was created.
