    3. TO: Betty All Sheets from St. Amant, La. In our Family History Center in Michigan we have a book titled "Orphan Trains" by Marilyn Irving Holt and published by the University of Nebraska Press. I am certain you will find many books published on the Orphan Trains of N.Y.C. in the 1800's. Matter of fact, a year or so ago I read about the Orphan Trains that dropped children off in Opelousas, Louisiana. Opelousas has a very active genealogy society who may possibly help you. The National Orphan Train Office in Concordia, Kansas may be found at: http://www.orphantrainriders.com If you go to http://www.google.com and type in "Orphan Trains" you will find many Orphan Train organizations and many states have Orphan Trainriders Lists with additional information. 3. I'm not Norm, but I can offer some insight. Declarations of birth were to be made by the child's father or, if impossible, by any other person who may have been present at the birth of the child. Of course, you will find examples where people who could not possibly have been present at the birth are making the declaration. For example, a delayed birth record of someone born in 1790 was made in 1858 by someone who was only 39 years old. So, it's possible there were some exceptions that slipped through the cracks. One of the advantages of the new index on the Secretary of State's website (when it's complete) is that you will be able to search for all births on an exact day without having to input a name. This doesn't help you, as you don't know the exact date of her birth, but it could be of interest to others, which is why I mention it. 3. Norm Hi My name is Betty All Sheets from St. Amant, La. I have a question about birth data. Do you think that children born (who later were adopted) could possibly have later birth records. Say a baby born in 1856 may not have been recorded until after adoption took place in say 1858? Is there any records of the children who came from New York on the orphan train to New Orleans? I am researching the All family from New Orleans- Dina Whipple-wife----In all her records you can tell that a definate date she was born is not known. This leads me to believe that is was maybe adopted or raised by someone other that parents. Even in her death records, her age is not defined. 2. Barbara
    3. I am hoping someone will help clarify the process to obtain birth and death certificates from Orleans Parish. Some were born prior to 1907, some not. Some died after 1961, some not. Are some ordered from the LA State Archives and others from Vital Records? Also, if birth/death is over 100 years old, are they available to anyone or still just blood kin? I would appreciate hearing your experiences in obtaining them as well. Thanks for helping me with these questions! Barbara

    2. Legislators Discuss Copyright Reform Genealogy Insider Posted by Grace Ever been hassled by a clerk who demands you have permission from the photographer before making copies of a 100-year-old portrait? Under current copyright law, you'll likely lose the fight with Wal-Mart's photo department. (Read more about copyright quandaries here.) Legislation working its way through the House and the Senate focuses on so-called "orphan works"—creations whose copyright owners cannot be identified or located. When someone wants to use or reproduce a work that is likely copyrighted, they risk being held liable for infringement; this reform aims to free up orphan works for public use. Although artists have concerns about the current legislation, copyright reform would be a boon for family historians, museums, libraries and educational institutions. 1. [LAORLEAN] St. Martinville cemetery looking for family links
    2. peggy
    3. St. Martinville cemetery looking for family links BY HOLLY LELEUX-THUBRON THE DAILY IBERIAN St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church in St. Martinville is in search of descendants of some of its cemetery’s oldest residents. Debbie Hebert, bookkeeper and cemetery administrator for the church, said several plots in the church’s cemetery are either abandoned, in disrepair or have never been issued a title and the church is following the proper procedures to notify family members before other action is taken. The Louisiana Cemetery Board governs the operations of cemeteries in the state and requires that for a period of 25 years, a list of these funeral plots must be published in a local newspaper in an effort to notify family members of their maintenance needs and current states. The church also is required to send a registered letter to the last known family contact. After the required attempts to contact decedents have been met, the cemetery authority is allowed to transfer ownership of the gravesites. Stanley LeBlanc, born in New Iberia and currently living in Dallas, is concerned about disturbing these historic final resting places. Heavily involved with a similar issue at St. Nicholas Cemetery in Patoutville, LeBlanc, who is an authority on the Teche Area’s genealogy, said it is a gray area and the church should proceed with a great deal of care and caution. One of LeBlanc’s main concerns is the difficulty in finding descendants two or three generations down a family line who may be unaware of ancestor names or where the final resting place of their ancestors might be. Leblanc said many of the surnames printed on the St. Michael’s Cemetery list are of those families that were original settlers in the area and their burial sites represent a great deal of rich history. Teche Area residents can view the list of the gravesites in question on The Daily Iberian’s Web site www.iberianet.com.

Can anyone verify if this Theophilus is the same individual as Etienne Theophilus THERIOT, son of Augustin Emelien THERIOT & Marie Angeline MICHEL? Also can anyone identify the parents of Julie EXNICIOUS? I also have found on-line that Etienne was married to Amedee CHAMPAGEN, but I cannot find any evidence of this at all in the South Louisiana Volumes. I suspect that this is an old New Orleans family.
