    3. Susan, Thank you for posting the response that you received from the HNOC. The method they used is how I would normally determine a modern address from an older (pre-1894) address. I explained this process in April in a message to the List: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/laorlean/2010-04/1270576954 I hesitate to quibble with the HNOC, for whom I have the greatest respect. However, I am not sure that this methodology can be used for addresses from the 1805 city directory. I have my doubts. If you could privately send me the name of the person who responded to you from the HNOC, I would like to ask them about this. I’ll let you know what I learn. 3. I previously posted a question about the location of 2 properties listed in the 1805 city directory. Norm suggested I contact the New Orleans Historic Collection. I received a very prompt response from HNOC regarding the current addresses of these locations: >>Using a block by block conversion chart (available online through the New Orleans Public Library's website) I have been able to determine the hundred block on which your ancestors properties were located. That is, 58 St. Peter is now within the 700 block, and 39 Dauphine is in the 200 block. The exact address is difficult to ascertain with great certainty - especially as the buildings may no longer be standing 205 years later. Using Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps from 1876 (before the change) and 1896 (after the change) I have been able to discover some additional pieces of information. I believe the property at 58 St. Peter was located on the uptown/lakeside corner of St. Peter and Royal. By 1876, there does not appear to be a property there facing St. Peter, but, by looking at the numbers, that is where one would logically have been. By 1876 there was still a building standing at 39 Dauphine, however I cannot say for sure that this is the same building inhabited by your ancestor. Currently, this property is listed as 219 Dauphine between Iberville and Bienville.<<

    3. Yes, the Louisiana State Archives in Baton Rouge has the old State Penitentiary prisoner records. They date back to 1866. The records are arranged in chronological order based on the date the prisoner arrived. Not all are indexed. So, it helps to know the date of arrival. 3. I am footnoting an article for publication in Le Raconteur and need help identifying some individuals mentioned. Here's what I have from a letter dated 10 June 1854 at New Orleans ". . . Poor Leee Dennis who married Smith had a Baby and Died nine days after leaving a son of of 10 days old. Her Pore Parents are are in Deap Sorrow as she is there only." In the New Orleans Obituary Index, I found an entry for Grace Louisa Smith, aged 19, who died 5 June 1854. She was the wife of Alexander Smith, Jr. Don't know if this is the right person, but the dates seem to fit. I haven't had a chance to check the obituaries themselves yet. There were two - one published in the Picayune 7 June 1854 and one in the Commercial Bulletin 7 June 1854. If anyone can help identify these people, please contact me at [email protected] Many thanks. Judy Riffel Baton Rouge

    1. Re: [LAORLEAN] Bourgeois lines.
    2. Here is the reply from Wisconsin Historical Society. I wonder why there is the trouble with getting it through Interlibrary Loan. Dear Joan, A check of our catalog indicates we do indeed hold a copy of "Bourgeois Lines" by Kenneth Toups, part of our extensive collection of family histories. They, unfortunately, do not circulate, and thus are not available for interlibrary loan. However, a check of Worldcat indicates that several Louisiana libraries hold copies as well: US,LA ASSUMPTION PARISH LIBR US,LA EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH LIBR US,LA LAFAYETTE PUB LIBR US,LA LOUISIANA STATE LIBR US,LA NEW ORLEANS PUB LIBR US,LA NICHOLLS STATE UNIV, ELLENDER MEM LIBR US,LA STATE LIBR OF LOUISIANA US,LA TULANE UNIV The book was published in 1985 when the author was apparently residing in Thibodeaux, Louisiana. I would be surprised if it was still available. 3. I'm pretty sure I just saw the Bourgeois book at the Franklin (LA) public library on their genealogy reference shelf. Which means A. it's a reference book and doesn't circulate and B. most of the small public libraries in the Bayou Teche and River Road area where Bourgeois first lived would have it, probably as a gift from the author. You might expand your search to larger libraries such as NOPL and/or state archives, but again the book probably doesn't circulate. Next alternative would be small book stores specializing in Louisiana history such as the Acadian Book Shop in New Orleans. Give them a call. Sorry I don't have the info handy. It's on Orleans Ave just off Royal; proprietor is Russell Desmond. And finally, someone on the list might have a copy to lend or copy from.
