The good thing that comes from having trees on ancestry is the contacts to relatives and the chance to indicate correct information. I, like Dee, am always willing, at no charge to share some of my source info. Also like Dee, I am working on a New Orleans Tree with some others, mailing because I truly believe that we are all cousins. You have to register on Jewishgen to see it, but there is no charge to register. I can update my data whenever I like. And because you have to register, people are far less likely to stumble across my information and copy it into their database from the site. There is easy access to contact the person who posted the tree and that can be a blind contact, i.e., the person contacting you doesn't know who you are. Because of this, many people have incorrectly entered New Orleans, Jefferson, Louisiana, USA as a place name in their Ancestry Public Member Trees. When I discovered this, I remembered a query to the List about this issue over two years ago. You can see that message here: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/laorlean/2008-03/1206055120 This mistake has obviously been going on for some time. I have notified Ancestry.com of the error, but to date it has not been corrected. In the meantime, people who enter data on Ancestry should be cautious about this auto-complete error, and should be cautious with the auto-complete function entirely, as I have seen many other mistakes made because of it. Everyone should also be aware that Ancestry family trees will frequently contain the erroneous place name of New Orleans, Jefferson, Louisiana, USA. It should of course be New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
I am not tree collector but I have over 100,000 people in my tree. I say about 80% are sourced now and I am still working on the rest. When I started this in 97 I didn't always put a source in the file since I had paper files, Now I am going back putting the paper into pics and attaching to the person or putting the source in from books and papers. But my tree is also NOT on anything ancestry owns. Enless you are Bruce Voelker, who had got a copy of my old tree from someone else around 2000 or so and has it up there, without sources and then leaves comments about dates saying it is unlikely this person married this person the dates put their ages to far apart. Well I have told Mr Bruce, I have the documents to prove that Johanna did marry Louis and yes Johanna was 20 years older then Louis. I know this is right I have the pics of them, I got first hand knowledge from her three granddaughters and her daughter-in-law who was the half sister of Johanna's husband Louis. So what it breaks down to is Johanna's third husband was her son's wife's half brother. My Great great great grandmother was the first cougar on the block(northshore). But anyways this is why my stuff is not on there. If people want to know who I am related to check out my site. I have reports up and if need be I can send proof for most right now and get back to you when I scan the rest. So not everyone with big trees or name/tree collectors. I am working on piecing a lot of my families together as they all come from the same area and we have so many cousins marrying cousins. I' m glad someone else mentioned this. While the Ancestry website may be valuable for records, it's a hash of poorly researched and virtually undocumented trees when it comes to LA. Personally, I've questioned 4 people about their huge trees with 2 no answers and 2 snippy replies. Their goal seems to be attaching as many people as possible. Frankly, when a tree gets upwards in the thousands, I think it loses its usefulness/credibility. Not to mention those who truncate their trees where it suits their agendas--deleting relatives they don't want to acknowledge. I don't understand why they bother. If you have a tree with 50,000 people on it, without ONE attached record, what exactly is your point? What exactly are you trying to accomplish? And if you don't want to include ALL of your direct antecedents and descendents, then keep your tree on your own software. Some of the attempts to "disguise" data are laughable, when they can be cross-checked with other sources and shown to be deliberatley fraudulent. While Ancestry provides records, they take no responsibility for the erroneous info posted by their subscribers. They only care about the subscription fees $$$ they collect. Anyone willing to pay the fee can post family trees that begin on Neptune, Jupiter, Mars, or Pluto. I am grateful for the work done by NOVA, without which I would have been lost in a morass of error. And I started with NOVA's site in the mid 90's. Remember when most genealogy sites were FREE? Ancestry.com bought most of them out and then started charging subscriber fees! Thank God Ancestry.com doesn't control library research. > Date: Fri, 20 Aug 2010 16:48:12 -0400 > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [LAORLEAN] Ancestry Place Name Error > > Great thoughts, there are also a whole lot of "tree collectors". I also noticed this on ancestry and FTM, all versions. You have to watch very carefully. Has to do with Jefferson Parish coming up before Orleans Parish. I also notified Ancestry.com of this problem, but no response. Lots of towns have same name, but different County, guess that is the problem. I change them when I find them in my files, or on line. Hi I was working on the St. Bernard Parish website and researching various pages searching for Cieutat... when it shifted me to a page for Archives, which said: 7 records available; click here to view records. When I did that I got this message: Enter your payment information below to begin your free trial account. After the 7-day trial, you will be billed $39.95 for a full year of access. You will NOT be billed if you cancel before the end of your trial. So my questions are..... have any of you had experience with Archives? Since it's on the St. Bernard site, does that mean it's reputable? Would it have more than Ancestry? Is it worth it? Any help will be appreciated. Renee

When I go to New Orleans for research I'm usually there for a month, so my husband and I rent a little furnished house in the Faubourg Marigny. We never have a car. I take the St. Claude Avenue bus as far as Canal Street and walk the rest of the way to NOPL or the Notarial Archives a few blocks further on Poydras Street. This isn't the nicest part of town, not because it's dangerous, but because it's ugly. There must be parking garages, but I've never paid any attention to them; remember that you're just a few blocks from the Superdome, and there's got to be parking for that. You could also call United Cab at 504-522-9771. Put this number in your cell phone. They're great. They come right away and the drivers know where they're going. You didn't mention where you're staying--at a hotel, or with friends/relatives? If you stay at one of the big hotels on Canal Street, you can walk to NOPL and the Archives. There's also a Holiday Inn very near NOPL. There is a parking garage directly across the street from the library, with the Holiday Inn in the next block going towards the Superdome -- it is a little run down; however, after using it a few times these last couple of years, I can say that I have never had any problems.
