    1. [LAORLEAN] conveyance office--correction

    3. I mistakenly said that the old Conveyance Office Books go from 1828 to around 1870. I meant to say they go until sometime in the 1970s. Carolyn Long

    3. The Conveyance Office is no longer in the basement of the Civil District Court next to City Hall. It's now in a tall, black marble office building at 1340 Poydras, across from City Hall. The Notarial Archives Research Center is on the third floor of this building, I think the Conveyance Office is on the fourth floor, but ask at the front desk before you take the elevator. I'm assuming you mean the old Conveyance Office Books (COBs), which go from 1828 (I think) to sometime in the 1870s. Note that the earlier records will probably be in French. These are HUGE books, weigh about twenty pounds each. There is nobody there to help you find what you want or lift the books off the shelves, and they don't even allow you to move a chair over to the table so you can sit down ("fire regulations"!). I don't think they let researchers put the books on the copy machines, and as far as I know, there's nobody there to make copies for you. I've always had to copy the information by hand--while standing up at the table. It's been several years since I've been there--maybe the staff has gotten more helpful since. It's a complete contrast to the Notarial Archives Research Center, where everybody is lovely. The more modern conveyance records are on a different floor. The only time I went there, I handed in my request slip, thinking they were going to bring me the book to look at, and instead the clerk came back with a stack of papers and changed me $20--and what I got was completely unintelligible legal jargon--useless! 3. Does anyone know when laws were enacted about what blood relatives could marry? We have been searching a family and it APPEARS that one young woman married her father's brother. I know at some point that, and first cousins, etc were prohibited from a legal marriage. Anyone know when? Thanks, Cheramie People say "High Maintenance!" like it's a bad thing.

    3. Just got this notice, just wanted to let everyone know. Several weeks ago Footnote.com (as part of iArchives) agreed to be acquired by Ancestry.com and that transaction has officially closed today. As we join forces with Ancestry.com there is a huge opportunity to leverage each other’s strengths and move even faster toward our goals. You may be curious about how this deal effects members of Footnote.com? The plan is to continue to run Footnote.com the way we have always run Footnote.com — continuing to do what we believe is best for our customers, our business and our brand. Now that the deal is officially closed we are excited to leverage some of Ancestry.com’s resources and expertise to take Footnote.com to the next level. It has been exciting to see Footnote.com grow over the past 4 years. Footnote.com started with only 5 million historical documents and today we have nearly 70 million searchable documents, over 1 million members, nearly 100,000 Footnote Pages, and over half million annotations added. We couldn’t have done it without our members and the great team at Footnote.com and we are excited for Ancestry.com’s support in the next chapter. 3. Dee, I need your advise. Before Katrina I helped an African-American family in St Bernard Parish with their genealogy. They were sure their ancesters/relatives were buried in Merrick Cemetery in Violet. A search of the cemetery found most tombs/stones had no names, and I could not find anyone with with any kind of list. I have gleaned lots of burials for Merrick in the Times Picayune with the help of Genealogybank and wonder where would the best place to put this list for use for others doing their own research. Thanks Sally

    2. If you have the time, I will look later tonight In a message dated 10/15/2010 1:48:32 P.M. Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: Thanks, Pat; that is the one I was looking at. But, alas, it's not the right girl. I am looking for a Bridget Salter/Salzer [her maiden name] who was born about that time [1820-ish] who married John Gordon. SO close . . . .but it won't work. . . On the N.O. marriage certificate for my ggrandfather Patrick Gordon, born in Ireland, he lists his parents as John Gordon and Bridget Salzer. Bridget may have been born in Ireland, or England. I was looking for Salter because Salzer sounds more German than English or Irish . . . I thought it could be a misspelling on the document. But I can't find Bridget Salzer either [and Bridget doesn't sound German]. Any thoughts or ideas most welcome! 1. Re: [LAORLEAN] OBIT LOOK UP PLEASE
    2. Thanks for looking. It was a very long shot that there might be an obit. But you can always hope there might be a gold mine out there. Again Thank you Pat In a message dated 10/15/2010 1:25:58 P.M. Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: Pat: The Obituary Index for the Tinmes Picayune and other early New Orleans newspaper is to be found at http://neworleanspubliclibrary.org/obits/obits.htm I do not fin d either person with the various spelling in the obituary index. The New Orleans GenWeb has early death certifcates index. I did not find either in this index for the various spellings. I may have found some of my family in the New Orleans Death Epidemic records and am hoping there might be an obit for these people. The person I am looking for is listed in that record as NICHOLAS WOLLFR_M age 14 who had died of "fever" on 16 July 1853. Also there is a CATHERINE WALFRON who died 18 July 1853 also of "fever". These two died at Charity Hospital. Thanking you in advance.
