I would like to know if anyone on this wonderful list could point me in the direction to find information on my g,g, grandmother. I did a search of Google Books and found her listed in"Report of cases argued and determined in the Supreme Court of Louisiana - 1875 Vol. 27". The case was Stewart Widow vs. VM Killmartin and JB Davis page 456. My grandmother's name was Virginia Sarah Moore Killmartin who died in NO in 1883. I would like to know where I could find information on the original case before it went to the Supreme Court. Thanks for any assistance. Patti
The case would have been tried first in one of the lower courts. If the court record still exists, it will be in the City ARchives, Louisiana Division of the New Orleans Public Library. Go to their web page, http://www.nutrias.org/~nopl/spec/speclist.htm and click on Orleans Parish Courts Finding Aids and Indexes. To get the Louisiana Supreme Court case, you can first read the published abstract in the book you cited below, and you can also get photocopies of the entire court transcript. Contact Florence Jumonville, Chair, Louisiana and Special Collections Department, Earl K. Long Library, University of New Orleans, at [email protected] There's a trick to discovering the docket number, which the library staff needs to access the records, but Dr. Jumonville should be able to help you with that. The good thing about court records, unlike notarial and sacramental (Catholic Church) records, is that they're usually in English. Sometimes the Supreme Court records are extremely long and detailed, and you can learn an amazing amount of personal information about the parties. But not always. I was able to find information concerning my great great grandfather's case that went before the Louisiana Supreme Court during that same period from the University of New Orleans Library Special Collections that had scanned some of the Louisiana Supreme Court files. You might try there. The library personnel were very helpful. It was all done via the Internet & didn't require a visit to the library. Patti: I had a case on the Achee family go to the Supreme Court of LA in 1859. I had found the sucession in the Ascension Parish index but when I wrote to Ascension Parish for a copy o,f succession they advised me that the suit file could not be located. I wrote to the LA Supreme Court in New Orleans and they advised me the origian Sucession was in the Supreme Court records. Long story to suggest that you write the LA Supreme Court in New Orleans; 400 Royal St; New Orleans, LA 70130. Good Luck! I seem to have come to that conclusion myself, having been subscribed to the "international" subscription for a long time, and never being able to find out anything about my German relatives. I have just switched my subscription to the standard version, thereby saving myself about $10/month. I just found myself being extremely disappointed with the "international" information that was coming my way. She has served as president of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, as well as the American Society of Genealogists. She edited the National Genealogical Society Quarterly for 16 years, making it into a leading forum for the teaching of research methods and principles. For many years, she has been a very popular instructor at Samford University in Birmingham with her Advanced Research Methodology Track. She has written 13 books and over 500 articles and essays. Her latest book is Evidence Explained:Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace. Elizabeth also wrote Professional Genealogy:A Manual for Researchers, Writers, Editors, Lecturers and Librarians. Both are essentials for personal and professional genealogists. She has written an historical novel called Isle of Canes, an epic account of a Creole family through four generations as it rose from slavery to rule Cane River's fabled Isle (a story drawn from Elizabeth's personal research in the archives of six nations). It was declared a "masterpiece" by Historical Novels Review. She is the genealogist who has had the most impact on American genealogy in the post-Roots era. Hi Listers, Can someone look in the newspaper archives and see if you can find anything about someone named Norma Rhymes from Chicago? She was born 20 November 1927, and lived in Chicago at least until the 1970s. She may have been married to someone with the family name Nelson. She had at least two children, David and Kathy Nelson, both of whom went into the military. I have all the Ancestry info on Norma - including her past addresses in Chicago. I am looking for what happened to her, and where she might be today. I'd really like to find her son David B. Nelson b 20 March 1955, but his name is really common, so I decided I'd have better luck looking for his mother Norma Rhymes. Thanks, Colleen
Actually, Cate, I began researching this very thing sometime ago, just never completed anything publishable yet. There have been items published about our customs, and of course, there are local tours around the area which discuss the traditions. Several of the museums and plantation houses have "mourning tours" during the month of October into the first week of November in honor of All Saints and All Souls Days (Nov. 1st and 2nd). I visited St. Joseph Plantation in Vacherie last year or the year before, taking notes and pictures throughout, and had a lively discussion with the tour guide afterward. The cemeteries used to be such lively places at this time of the year. I'd love to see the tradition come back in full swing, after all, it's still a local holiday, so why not take advantage? I sometimes regret my son, my brother, my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins are buried in a mausoleum because it doesn't have the same feel as an open cemetery. So I always pay a visit to departed friends in Metairie cemetery, just to get that oldtime feeling. Thankfully, I have so many departed loved ones in other cemeteries, I could easily spent weeks visiting each one and really capture the spirit (no pun intended) of the season. Carolyn, thanks so much for the heads up regarding the Society of the Dearly Departed.
