Considering the possibility that this could be a surname whose original spelling the family altered to get folks to pronounce it correctly, how IS it pronounced? Any idea of the ethnic origins? It suggests Germanic to me. Just speculating... Danna: When you enter your local library web page look for a link such as "Database" or something similar then it should lead you to state library choice then enter your local library card number then you should probably see Newsbank on the right hand column about half way down. If you still have trouble your local librarian probably could give you instructions to get to the State Library where you will not have a charge. Dont sign onto NewsBank directly as there will be a charge. Times Picayune can be accessed from NewsBank. If you are located in a major citty in Lousiana and have a library card you can go on your local library site to "Database" or some name like that then enter your library card number in the dialog box then select select "Statewide Databases" about half way down you will click on Newsbank. NewsBank has index Times Picahune since 1/1/1989 and Baton Rouge Advocate from 1/1/1986. Earlier Times Picayune has been index by the New Orleans Public Library. Go to http://neworleanspubliclibrary.org/obits/obits.htm. Obituary File had complete coverage from 1837-1972. New Orleans GenWeb Project picks up when the library Index above leaves off. Go to http://www.usgwarchives.net/la/orleans/_tpi.htm. Jefferson Parish Library has index of Times Picayune http://www.jefferson.lib.la.us/obit/ObitSearch.asp for the period of January, 1972 through 1978. Sorry -- I sent this message before I was finished with it. So, here is the complete message. As far as I can tell, the way to pronounce Bossier City is Bo-jour City or Bo-shure City. But, I wouldn't assume that's the way you would pronounce your family name. In Louisiana, it seems nothing is pronounced the way you might think it would be. For instance, we have a city just southeast of here that is spelled Cloutierville. They pronounce it "Clutchie-ville." Normal French pronunciation would be Clou-ti-a-ville. It is named after a French family, and I'm not sure how the family pronounces the name. My advice is, don't assume anything from the Louisiana pronunciation. Kind Regards, Linda On Nov 6, 2010, at 6:54 PM, Gene Data wrote: This is probably a dumb question but I'm just going to go ahead and embarrass myself anyway: I've been told that Bossier City is pronounce Bo-zjer or bō′·zhər [not exactly sure how to spell this so you know how it sounds. So I hope you get the idea] Now, my question is.... if the city is pronounced bō′·zhər does that mean that the surname - Bossier - is also pronounced the same way??? I had thought is was pronounced [so it sounded French] Bos see yay Since this is one of my surnames, figured I'd better learn how to pronounce it correctly!!! Renée
As far as I can tell, the way to pronounce Bossier is Bo-jour or Bo- shure. But, I wouldn't assume that's the way you would pronounce your family name. In Louisiana, it seems nothing is pronounced the way you might think it would be. For instance, we have a city just southeast of hear that is spelled Cloutierville. It takes as long to get an error message as long as it takes me to go through them. There is three in there from you that are all to big. I just deferred them so you might get a message now. >From the website of the state Library http://www.state.lib.la.us/ Under Search, click on Articles and Newspapers You will have to log in with your library card number Scroll down until you get to Newsbank There will be several Louisiana newspapers listed. It is not just obituaries, it is full articles that appeared in the newspapers - minus pictures. You will have to search for the names you want. Some deaths just listed the names; the obituaries are not included. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Julie Campbell Hernandez" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, November 06, 2010 8:26 PM Subject: Re: [LAORLEAN] One MO' Time > Nancy, > > I saw your response to Carolyn about finding obituaries from the Times > Picayune at the State Library.
