Since he didn't come to Biloxi between the time frame when the Acadians were exiled, would he be called a Acadian ? If not what would he be called?" ================================== Amanda: Here are the general rules for classifying the Europeans who came to North America and eventually settled in Louisiana and other Gulf states areas. If a person of French origin comes to North America and settles in the Louisiana territory he would be classified a Creole If a person of French origin comes to North America and settles in Canada he would be classified a French Canadian If a person of French origin comes to North America and settles in Canada and then migrates down to Louisiana he would be classified French Canadian, but sometimes especially in earlier times he was classified as a Creole. If a person of French origin comes to North America and settles in the Maritime provinces of Canada (the area earlier called Acadia) he would be classified Acadian If a person of French origin comes to North America and settles in the Maritime provinces of Canada (the area earlier called Acadia) and then was exiled by the British he would be classified Acadian exile If a person of French origin comes to North America and settles in the Maritime provinces of Canada (the area earlier called Acadia) and then was exiled by the British, but later returns to the maritime areas of Canada, or other areas of Canada, or remains in New England he would be classified Acadian If a person of French origin comes to North America and settles in the Maritime provinces of Canada (the area earlier called Acadia) and then was exiled by the British, but later establishes in Louisiana he too was classified as an Acadian, but later the term Cajun began to be used to distinguish between descendants of the Acadians who settled in Louisiana and those who settled in all of the other areas except in Louisiana. I am sure that there will be some who take exception to what I have just stated. But, there are so many opinions about Acadian culture and history, I thought I would add my 2 cents.
