Searching for family and info on Daniel Landis, a farmer from Warwick, Chester Co, PA born 10/27/1803 and died 4/7/1878 in N Coventry, Chester Co. He was married to Elizabeth JONES born 8/29/1810 and died 12/20/1869 in N Coventry. Elizabeth's mother, Mary JONES lived with them until she died at age 99, 11 months in 1866. Both Daneil and Elizabeth are buried in St Peter's Reformed Chuirch in Knauertown. in Warwick twp. with 2 of their children, Allen and Elizabeth. I think Mary JONES is buried in Oak Grove Cemetry in Parker Ford. They had 6 children: William H, Mary, Aaron, Allen, Elizabeth and Daniel W LANDIS. Aaron and Allen were victims of the Civil War. Daughter Elizabeth died at age 5. Daniel W LANDIS moved to Pottstown and died there in 1886. He is buried in Mt Zion Cemetery. Does any one have info on this line of Landis from Chester County PAin late 1700's? Any survivors of William H LANDIS or Mary LANDIS? Also, where can I find spouse of Mary Jones? Does anyone know of an ABRAHAM JONES? Pleae e-maiil me at audiana@webt.net Thank you Diana
FWIW: I attended the Baughman Burial Ground Assn. meeting on 10 July. In it a story was told about the cemetery at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church in Bart Twp, Lancaster County, PA. In the 1930s or so ( prior to the pubication of McIlwain's history of the church and gravestone information ) a man was hired to clean up the cemetery which was weedy and in bad shape. He first piled all the stones in a huge heap then de-weeded and mowed. He left without replacing the stones and "the congregation did its best to figure out where they belonged." Bob Ballantyne/PA
It's my understanding that it is German. Can someone on the Landis list please tell me the origin of the Landis name. Is it German or Scots? Thank you, Marilyn Jenkins Prinzing
I am new to this list and looking for information on a Christian Landis of eastern Lancaster County, mid to late 1800s. This is all I have on him from census data: Upper Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Pa 1850 census: 207/216 Landis, Christian 39 ( maybe 30 ) Farmer Wife: Esther age 31 Children: Henry ; 10; Reuben 3; Adam 1 Appears in the 1860 census at age 46 with two additional children: Milton and Lydice(sp?) My interest is this. My great-grandfather ( William Hamer Johnson, 1858 - 1928 ) was orphaned at age 6 and he and his family of three other siblings were broken up and sent several different places to live. His mother died in 1877 when he was 19. William later moved to Philadelphia where he lived most of his adult life. He had two sons, Christian Johnson and Landis Johnson, the later my grandfather. It has been a mystery to all of us why he chose those names. Landis Johnson was my maternal grandfather. I have found no people named Landis in the extensive genealogy developed so far. The only clue I have is that the above mentioned Christian Landis lived in the area of Lancaster County where Wm H Johnson lived before his move to Philadelphia, and C. Landis may have befriended or raised or othewrise helped William Hamer Johnson. I am hoping someone knows more about Christian Landis. Robert Landis Ballantyne
LANDIS researchers: Would like to ask the favor of a lookup in your own database of any relationship to the following direct ancestor (Swiss?) of whom I am currently stumped: Mary Elizabeth LANDIS (my gggrandmother) b. May 1840 in Knoxville, Tennessee m. Cape Giradeau, Missouri to William Samuel BOGART d. 1867 I have photos of her head stone located in Lebanon, Missouri. Would be greatly appreciative of any info on this person, or any tips on other excellent resources for researching this surname. Let me know if I can also do a favor in return. I know that some of you are interested in the Landis line of Tennessee...not totally awake and can not for the life of me remember what it was that I asked her about. Stacie ----- Original Message ----- From: Eddie Truitt To: onionring@BLomand.Net Sent: Sunday, November 14, 1999 3:30 PM Subject: Landis Hi Stacie, Just found your Bedford County query. Briant Landis was a neighbor of my gr-gr grandparents, Henry and Lavina Clark, just south of Unionville. Briant appraised Henry's estate after his death. The two men witnessed several documents for each other. (Ms) Eddie Truitt
