Hi Andy: Maybe you'd like to clarify the dates below....you say David was born in 17"8"1 and married in 17"9"1?? I show a David Landes in my tree born 26 April 1781 but he married Elizabeth Herman on 04 April 1808. Don't have place of birth or marriage but if this is your David, he is the son of Christian LANDES and Mariah BIXLER and is a half brother to my ancestor, John LANDES. Wellllll Andy, there's a David Landis lurking on a twig of my family tree who could be the same. According to W.H. Beers History of Miami County, Ohio, 1880, "Jacob ETTER, farmer; P.O. West Milton; born in Bucks Co., Penn., in the year 1828; is a son of Jacob and Elizabeth ETTER; his father was also born in the same county and State. There they were married and lived till their removal to Ohio; his father died in Germantown, Ohio, in 1833; his mother was born in Schuylkill Co., Penn., and was thrice married -- secondly, with Joseph KLEIN, and Lastly, with David LANDIS. After his death, she resided with our subject till her decease in 1865." Further on it states that the younger Jacob's "second marriage was celebrated in February, 1878, with Mary H. HARLACHER; she was born in Montgomery Co., in 1835, and is a representataive of the same church. . . " which is to say, the German Baptist Church. In Miami County marrige records, Jacob's second wife is Mary H. HOLLICKER. Now that's an easy slide to HOLLINGER (or vice versa). One could imagine David LANDIS marrying the widow KLEIN (formerly the widow ETTER), thus facilitating the acquaintance and courtship between his first wife's niece (or other female relative) and his second wife's son. The German Baptists were and are a pretty close-knit community, so I think this is a possible scenario. Can't promise you that this is your David LANDIS, but it's an intriguing clue. On top of all that, a daughter of the younger Jacob ETTER married William Austin LANDIS. I haven't found the connection between W.A. and David, but I don't have all the brothers and sisters of W.A.'s father (Abraham M. LANDIS, born in Ohio, married Lydia OVERHOLSER) and grandfather (Abraham LANDIS, born in Pennsylvania, married Mary MILLER). Fellow List Members, I have a couple of LANDIS sources I am willing to check for people. First, I have transcriptions of all the LANDIS/etc. entries from the Ohio Census 1820-1880 that I could find. (I didn't copy the LANDERS spelling, though) If you can give me some info. about your Ohio LANDISes--their names, how old they should have been in a given census year, and the names and ages of persons who should have been in the household with them, stuff like that--I will be glad to check for them. Also, I have a list of all the deaths for persons whose surname began with "LAND--" who died in Ohio between 1913 and 1937. (But, again, no LANDERS) They were taken from the searchable database of Ohio deaths on the Ohio Historical Society's web site. If you would like me to check for your LANDIS/etc. I need their name and the probable county of death. If you don't know the county, the name would be enough. Lastly, I live in Stark County, OH and we have a pretty good genealogy collection at our local library which includes some info. on every county in the state. I would be glad to do quick look-ups for people. (The operative word here is "quick.") I can't get into any major research for people (the "anything-you-can-find" kind) without charging you my regular research fee. But if you want me to check for a birth, death, marriage, cemetery, etc. record, I will see if the library has any info. that can help you. Please be SPECIFIC with your request. The name of the person you are looking for (it doesn't have to be a LANDIS, if you have any Ohio ancestors, I can still check), their exact or approximate birth, marriage, and/or death date, what kind of a record you want on them, and the names of any other pertinent people who might be mentioned in the record--parents on a birth, spouse on a marriage, children on a census, etc. I am available to do more extensive Ohio research for a fee, and I will send you info. on that if you are interested.
