    1. LANDISS UPDATE
    2. Dan Landiss
    3. Thanks to some recent information provided by Roger Rice Landers, Fred Levi Landiss and Carroll Hayden; the genealogical data at: http://www.landiss.com/family/ has been updated this morning. This is the family line topped by John Landers (bef. 1718) of Pennsylvania and North Carolina. It is especially strong along the branch which moved through Tennessee and into Indiana, and thence to Illinois. The branch which migrated to Arkansas and later into Texas is well-represented, as is the branch which moved from Indiana back to Tennessee. About 1900 individuals are indexed. The 1930 manuscript of Rev. William Landiss (1867-1949), which details much of the history of the Indiana clan, is posted in its entirety; and several pertinent photographs are available. Have fun, and Happy Presidents' Day! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dan Landiss <mailto:dan@landiss.com> St. Louis, MO <http://www.landiss.com> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    3. Stacie; Yes, it was ment to be 1787. My Jacob may have been from Lehigh or Bucks County. There was a Joseph Landis in Darke County who purchased land in Darke County in 1820. He died in 1824 leaving no heirs and the land reverted to his father Michael Landis in Lehigh County. When I sent for my ggg grandfather Jacob's will the paperwork for this sale was mixed into a civil case which had been filed by one of Jacob's son-in-laws. My Jacob was in Ohio as earily as 1814 and purchased land in Pickaway County OH in 1818. Then sold this land and moved to Darke County in 1828. I have more leads and any info you can share with me I would greatly appreciate. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

    1. Landis Valley
    2. Harry, I just looked in my Atlas for Landis Valley. I couldn't pinpoint it, but Landisville is on there. I would imagine Landisville is in the same area. Maybe even in Landis Valley. They would be in Lancaster County, just a little northwest of Lancaster City. I too would like to know about the area. My maternal great-grandmother's family came from that area to Seneca County, Ohio. It would have been prior to 1867, because that is about the time my great-grandmother was born. Their surname was Landis. Patricia (Edwards) Maher almenami@aol.com

    1. Landis, Joseph
    2. Hi, I'm looking for background information on Joseph Landis. He was born in Montgomery County, Ohio, on August 18, 1853. He was a carpenter by trade and was also an Old Order Dunkard. He married Mary Etta Robison (9/4/1859-2/16/1916) daughter of James Robison (20/2/1816-4/19/1870) and Tabitha Jane Mantz (9/4/1826-11/1/1882) on November 17, 1878, in North Manchester, IN (actually if anyone knows anything about the Robisons, I'd be interested in that, too). Their children were: Sarah Jane Landis 9/1/1879-1/23/1902, Aaron Vesta Landis 8/22/1882-6/7/1945 and Mary Ida Landis 1/12/1887-6/23/1905. Joseph and Mary both died in Wabash County (North Manchester, I think) and were buried in the Old Order Cemetery outside North Manchester. I have no information about Joseph's parents or if he had any siblings, and would appreciate any information anyone can share. Thank you. Dixie Landis Bradley

    3. Marilyn, I suspect by now that you have your answer to your query. However, for future use you may want to consider the US Geological Survey's GEOGRAPHIC NAMES INFORMATION SYSTEM at the following website: http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis Use of the USGS's GNIS failed to find a Landis Valley, but did find a Landis Gulch in Trinity County, California and a Landis Draw in Niobrara County, Wyoming. 3. Hello; I was sorry to hear that you had discontinued your Landis newsletter. Your information is always welcome on my email. I am searching for a Jacob Landis who was born in PA 1887, and married to an Elizabeth ? Landis. These two moved to Ohio sometime around 1812 to 1814, and purchased land in 1816 in Pickaway County, OH. In 1828 they moved to Darke County Ohio, where they both stayed until their deaths. My belief is that they were Brethren. Can you point me in any direction in PA. I was about ready to send out this info on your newsletter where it came to an end. Thanks so very much, Sharon Derrickson, SDproperties@hotmail.com ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Not odd at all, Stacie. It could be a typo or if the book was typed it could have been a written error or that may be how the surname was spelled by the person supplying the information. One needs to look at the whole record, including who provided the information and other things, like was the record a transcript. I spent a long time looking through 1860 U.S. census records in southwest Georgia, for my JOHNSON ancestor, only to learn that the family was recorded as JOHNSTON. In 1850, the family was recorded as JOHNSON and in 1870. But, the marriage record for my ancestor in 1855 had his name spelled JOHNSTON. Which is correct? I don't know. The modern lines use JOHNSON. And while I'd been warned over and over again to look for variant spellings, I didn't heed the advice for this family. Now with my WEISS family (who married LANDISes), they deliberately changed the spelling. I'm told that my 2nd GGF decided to do it 'cause he was tired of his name being misprounounced (like WICE). He pronounced it like the Anglican spelling of WISE. In that case, I know both spellings are correct. Did he do it legally via the courts? Nope. -- Karon ********************************************************************* * mailto:boszek@hitter.net * * Web Page: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/karon_bosze/ * * Instant Messenger (AIM): Norak75 * *********************************************************************
