    1. [LANDIS] new bells & whistles
    2. Stacie
    3. Good Morning, Well I think I have the Landis part of the site done...if you should run into a problem let me know. You will notice that I have added to the main page"S" (main page, Landis page, Morr, Scheck, standirdge, surname wall...etc) a new tool. If you have any questions, or whatever it is a DIRECT link to me. I am almost always near the computer...I try to check my email whenever I think of it now which being as my computer is in the dining room and the dining room is in the center of my house I check quite often... but of course this isn't just for email. If I am on the computer you will be directly sent to me (sort of like chatting) but if I am away and the screensaver is on you will be sent to my email...so I hope that you find this useful to ask questions give advice, info whatever...I put it there to be of more help to you. let me know if any of the sites aren't working...I still have the other surnames to move adn then I will begin adding the info I haven't gotten to as well as the new spellings of Landis that I have ran across....won't you all be surprised 8-) I hope you are enjoying the site...the hits are up from 10-15 a day to 30-40 a day....Thanks for your support ... 1. [LANDIS] RIP-OFF ALERT
    2. Dan Landiss
    3. The message below came from another list I belong to. Passing it along FYI. Subject: Rip-offs of the genealogy community continues Good Morning, friends and cousins in the genealogy community! The response to the identification of the genealogy rip-off operation in Denver last week has been tremendous with a steady stream of requests for add'l info. The operation in Denver with a newly discovered "branch" in Utah is an incarnation of the identical scheme that Halbert's used. The same form letters, books and newsletters are being sold, and the same fake "Crests" and other products are being created "to exacting standards". The new incarnation has not yet been linked financially to Halbert“s or NUMA Halbert parent), but the resemblance is so close, they could be joined at the hip, operating under dba's Mountain West News Service, Mountain Pacific News Service, and MORPHCORP. The Better Business Bureau reports that the company has joined the BBB in January 2000, opened in 1985, and is rated as satisfactory. A complete history of Halbert's, courtesy of Jeff Scism (despite our surname homonyms, we ain't kin --- he hopes!) is available a http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~blksheep/shame/halberts.htm Volunteers interested in assisting in informing the genealogy community of this scam have come out of the woodwork. We would ask the recipients of this email the following: 1) A sample of the Colorado flyer is at http://www.dfc.cc/CyberCousins/genfraud.jpg Print it and post in the genealogy section at your library with appropriate message and make announcements at your gensoc. 2) After you have read it, as a researcher you realize the fraud that it is. Go to the Federal Trade Commissions website at https://www.ftc.gov/ftc/complaint.htm and file a complaint ONLINE. For a sample complaint and further detailed information to use, please go to http://www.dfc.cc/CyberCousins/complaint.txt 3) Forward this to every list you are on. 4) If you are a member of NGS (shane@ngsgenealogy.org) or FGS (fgs-office@fgs.org), contact those organizations and ask that they get members motivated. Gentech, Inc. (beau@connect.net) has a director and a well-known regular conference speaker in the Denver metro. I asked them to do some local research. No response to date. 5) Contact every genealogy columnist whose work you read, both local and online such as Myra Gormley (myravg@prodigy.net} or Dick Eastman (ROOTS@compuserve.com) who was stalwart in early work on Halbert's, both of whom, as well as others, are on this list. No response to date. 6} If you have rec'd a flyer yourself, please report the names and addresses to me. We need to know all the DBAs they are using. Then take it to the local post office and file a complaint. 7) If you are in the Denver area, we need search of the court house records to determine any corporate connections. If we can make a corporate connection, I am fairly sure the restraints placed on Halbert's can be extended by the proper authorities. 8) If you are a supplier (software, services, researcher) to the genealogy community, this type of scam effects you even more. Contribute to the effort. 9) This is no small time scam. Halbert's is owned by a company named NUMA which in turn is owned by CENDANT. Go to http://itjobs.cendant.com/cendant_co.html to find other Cendant companies. You will NOT be happy with how you have been doing business with folks like this --- I promise you. These scams are more likely to rip off folks less involved in genealogy than most recipients of this msg. Most of us will recognize it for what it is and trash it. That does not relieve us of the responsibility of making it more difficult for these and other parasites within our community to enjoy their ill-gotten gains. I have found far too many that "don't want to get involved", "Didn't happen on my watch." (to use an old Navy excuse), running from controversy and responsibility. Let us unite in eradicating those that are behind an obvious attempt to profit unethically from the popularity of genealogy. Jan Daily

    3. Hello all; Looking for information on Jacob Landes from Salford Township, PA died 1777. I know there are many out there and I would like to fill in some gaps on the information I have. 2. Stacie, I'm all for whatever you decide to do. You are the one who has all that extra work to do, so you decide. Whatever you do, it will be of a lot of help to us Landis descendants. Maybe, we will end up finding out a lot more important information, when you are finished. I wish there was someway I could help you transfer everything. When you get all of your neat piles organized, let us know how you did it. I have the same thing here. In boxes, on chairs, on tables, on the floor, you name it. Patricia (Edwards) Maher my ancestor was Minnie Escalila Landis Moyer. Born in Flat Rock, Seneca County, Ohio. Died in Bellevue, Huron County, Ohio.

    3. I am still waiting to get the info I need to move my site but until then decided to go through my tons of info. I have a filing cabinet and then 4 one inch binders ...(not to mention the piles on the floor) so I started "spring cleaning" and had a great thought for when I do start getting moved.... I have at least 500-1000 emails with short family lines...from all over the states, & world...I would like to add these on the website..perhaps 5 per page..say for example 5 different lines for the name David Landis...(may not be the same David..they may just share the same name...).(i will be emailing the individiuals for their permission also) but thought I would run it across all of you to see what you thought.....I think it will be a great help ....let me know what you think ...I have some other awesome ideas but don't want to start anything until I move the website... 3. I don't know for sure, but my records do not show a David Landis, son of David Landis 1801. Some sources I have: I do have an obituary for a Mr. William Warner who died at his daughter's house Mrs. David Landis 26 Feb 1888, Hicksville, OH. (I don't know who this is) Obituary for Mariah Landis DeLong, daughter of David and Mary Landis - was born in Preble county, Ohio, 11 Dec. 1821. Moved to Defiance county, Ohio, with her parents in 1835. She was unted in marriage with Solomon DeLong August 21, 1841 Marriages 1808-1830 from Preble co. David Landis 8-17-1819 to Sarah Gest David Landers 8-16-1814 to Mary Sawer *****This is the one, I think is my Ablsolem's parents. 1850 Census for Defiance Co., OH , list David Landis 49 PA, Mary 52 MD, Absalom 23 OH, Sarah A. 18 OH, Josiah 15 OH, Harriet 9 OH. Quote from "1883 History of Defiance County" - A contract was made September 29, 1838 with David Landis to carry the mail once in two weeks, afterward changed to a weekly and finaly to a semi-weekly mail. Maria Landis, now the widow of Solon DeLong and Ranson Osborn were the witnesses to the contract. John Landis was the first mail carrier, and afterward his brother, Absalom Landis, then a little short-legged, stubby boy." 3. I am not sure if Linda is still on this list or not so just in case she isn't I wanted to forward her query to the list in case of a possible link to one of the other list members. or if you can offer her any help let me know and Iwill forward it to her...here is what she sent me.: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ by the way--on the Ohio Census list on your (our :) site--the Jacob Landis on the 1860 census is my great grandfather (the one on mill rd. or close-ish) I don't hve the info in front of me.:) On the census it shows my great grandmother as Nancy M. Haynes (with her son, ---Haynes age 5 or so) but--my grandfather George Landis is there on that Census where ist llists all of the children--he's age 61/2 mo. which is just right as he was born Jan 5, 1860. Obviously my father was the second youngest :) I'm assuming that the Joseph Landis listed just above or below him on your Census list is his brother--it's the house next door--and there was a Joseph--Can anyone help aout with this? Lauren gave me the basic info a while ago, but I can't work back to my great grandfather Jacob's parents (I think he was Jacob Isaac) and my great grandmother's maiden name was Nancy Mary Spencer before she was a Haynes and then a Landis. I can't work back any further than her either--Both George Edward Landis--Jacob's son (my grandfather--and Isa May Brown Landis--my grandmother) died when the younger children were young enough to go to an orphanage--in Portland, Oregon-- Does anyone have any info on an Arthur or George ArthurLandis b. about feb. 1903 in Portland, Oregon--He just sort of disappeared. I know he was married at least once but no one seems to remember anything else-- ********************************* Thanks Stacie onionring@blomand.net, or SweetPotato@ancestry.com ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Sweet Potato's Genealogy Page! http://homepages.go.com/~stacie_lea/index.htm ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Get paid to surf the web, I do. http://www.alladvantage.com/home.asp?refid=faq381 ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
