Hello there, Perhaps some kind soul can help me or put me in the right direction for help. On May 13th, 1916 my father was a sea scout out of Liverpool aboard the ship R.M.S. (L?)ongarino of Plymouth. They had an encounter with a submarine which circled them for days. Many instances firing shells at them. To make a long story short, my father said the captain of this ship was Captain Makepeace. He said their encounter occurred at Long. 7 Lat. 50, have no idea where that might be. Of further interest to me was my father saying, " The 1/4 master hoisted the "red ensign" on the fore mast". After a time they hoisted Red Burger over a Black Ball is flown from signal halyard. The ship managed to return safely to Plymouth. My father wrote this account as a young boy and put it in a bottle to throw overboard should their ship sink. He wanted his mother to know what happened to him. Any suggestions on what these signals meant or where this "Long. 7..Lat. 50" is would be appreciated. Thank you for any suggestions or help.
