    3. Yes. Olive, I know where you mean, the Old Man and Scythe Inn in Churchgate. It's been a pub "sin' Adam were a lad", and there is a sign saying that the Earl of Derby, then Lord Lieutenant of Lancaster, spent his last night there before getting "topped" in the square for attacking Bolton during the War. It was apparently Prince Rupert really, but they wouldn't beleive him. Apparently the citizens were proper sorry for him and bewailed his loss summat awful. No, I missed the Civil War too. Sorry to be a smarty-clogs, but I'm fascinated by Military History! There was a bit of a battle at Westhoughton too, it seems, some Cavaliers thumped us Howfeners up Church Road. The theatre or cinema is fairly near there, it is or was Bolton Market Square. Love Local History too! Cheers, Ian

    3. Ian Yes, I think I mean Churchgate. The Theatre - well, there was something to do with the Civil War thereabouts. I have it in my head that there was a monument or something similar or a notice on the wall, was it something to do with the Earl of Derby. My brain must be out of focus. No, I was not there during the Civil War!! Olive

    2. Dear All Oh the memories. I remember Rossis in Southport where the queue would be miles long. Then I worked as an icecream seller in a newsagents and the icecream was free to me. But it was so foul, watered down , and never had any of it!! Is Rossi still going Helen in Lancs

    3. Blimey love, you've lost me! I don't know Bolton very well myself, and visits are few and far between, I think you mean Churchgate, which is right from Bradshawgate. Do you mean the Cinema? I have seen old pictures, but much of even quite recent Bolton has been pulled down now. I think Comet is where you mean, nowadays! I used to work at the Telephone exchange, which was - well, still is - on Church Street, behind the Blue Boar; it was something of a slum then, is a car park now. There were ancient, rat infested warehouses across the road when I worked there in the Eighties and early Nineties. Just above the river Irwell, what is left of it. I would guess your nurses were at Oldham Royal Infirmary, which was a lovely old brick building with bits sticking out all over the place, reminiscent of the Addams Family mansion! They pulled it down because there simply wasn't room to expand it, the streets crowded it too close. The Royal Oldham, as they now call it, is up near Latics football ground. Ages since I was there, too! Ian

    3. Ian, Rochdale Cowboy, that rings a bell and Mike Harding too. I am not sure which Hospital, but I shall never forget the sight which was kind of like a Christmas card scene. Sabinis was opposite the Theatre, is it Church Street, goodness it is so many years since I was there. To the right of Bradshawgate? Nearby was a shop where we got the School uniform from. I loved my school blazer, but can you imagine anyone wearing School hats today? Looks like there are not so many Bolton people on the list. I lived in Radcliffe and went to School in Bolton. Last time I was there I brought home some Pasties, but they were not the same after they had been frozen, they were much better as originally eaten, straight out of the oven. Olive

    3. Cor, Bren; is Highbarn School what used to be Royton Central? I went there in the Sixties! As for Byron St, my Mum went there as a little girl! Once sat in the Spitfire on the old golf links on Highbarn Road too, in the Fifties. I went to the recent Memorial service at the Air Cadets' place, my Uncle Harry Exley was one of the dead members they were remembering. My Nanna & Grandad Exley lived on Turf Lane for years, then on Heyside at the top of Blackshaw Lane, and my other Grandad, the Winterbottom one, was born on Oldham Road in 1900! My son lives in Werneth somewhere, has just moved in. Tandlehill Park is an old playground of both mine and my Mum's, back in the Thirties. Used to be on Rochdale Buses in the 60s, spent hours zooming up and down Oldham Road on the number 9 buses to Ashton. Talk about a small world! Ian

    3. Maybe a few locals Olive, got used to blank looks and/or a moment's silence when I mentioned Shaw or Royton, where everyone knew Oldham and Rochdale. Blame the Army I suppose, I was the Rochdale Cowboy for ages in the 70s when Mike Harding popped up. Shame he stopped, I reckon! Which Oldham Hospital was it, Boundary Park - the one which is still there - or Oldham Royal Infirmary? I was actually born in the Oldham Royal, the old building, before they demolished it (Would have had a job afterwards of course!) Yes, I still love Oldham, though I have been in Bolton nearly twenty years now, Shaw and area still feel like home! Didn't know Granelli's were still going, even in boxes; all I seem to see is Carte d'Or and things - not that I don't like them! I don't know Sabini's; has anyone ever been to the Cafe Vienna in Deane, near the park? Best grub i' Bolton, I reckon, and not expensive either. Hope that doesn't count as advertising?! Their Cherry Vienna is great for ice cream fanciers! Ian

    3. Yes, please Jim....please follow up if at all possible. I first posted the question on the MAN list about 6 months ago...but we didn't get a satisfactory (to me!) answer. Although it certainly seems that "twists" was the name used over a lot of (north?) Manchester, it wasn't the one I remember...or, rather, don't remember. I have a vivid memory of "me Mum" standing outside the entrance of Platt Park on Dickenson Road at an ice cream van (almost certainly Sivori's) and saying "A couple of .............s, please" In the back of my mind is an idea the name began either with a "C" or an "S"...but I could be very wrong. And, sorry, no Maggie...I'm not that Alan Wright. I was born in Maida St (then called Watson St) in Longsight, just off Matthews Lane. And no brothers at all! Cheers Alan

    3. Hang on! Royton is not such a mistery place, I lived there for 5 years. Went to Byron St. County Primary in the 60's, ate Grannelli's but who was Mr Whippy? Was it him who sold the white foam in cones? Great place and great people, but must admit when I moved away everyone looked at me clueless when I said where I had come from, plus they did not understand a word I said. 3. Ian Surely everyone has heard of Shaw and Royton. Some years ago my Mum and I took someone to visit a relative in Oldham Hospital. What a wonderful sight as we sat outside in the car, a bunch of nurses with lanterns and capes which fastened across their fronts were setting off singing carols, yes, it was just before Christmas. It was so touching to see. Thought you might like this memory of Oldham. Granellis we can still get in the supermarket, in boxes now. Come on, someone must have something to say about Sabinis at Bolton and the Pastie Shop nearby. Used to go there for School dinner, Pastie and blackcurrant tart and some days ice cream too. Greedy soul I sound, don`t I? Olive
