My mother used to say "cut off his nose to spite his face", is this a Lancashire saying? I have not heard it for a long time. Suzanne
Hi Allen This stirred up fond memories of my grandmother from Castleton, Lancs, and also stirred up my appetite. Having moved to the US in 1910, lamb was not that available in small towns so she used beef. You described it well. Thanks for thek memories Ron
Dear Listers, Since I've had a few messages about how slow the lists seem, I thought it might be good to bring to your attention a few of the items posted at RootsWeb's Help Desk. In addition to the ISPs that are blocking RootsWeb mail, I've also noticed quite a few bounces for subscribers to Wanadoo, FSNet, and Freeserve. :-( Best wishes, Lynne > Mail Blocked by ISPs: > 2005-09-01 > Several ISPs are blocking mail from us, especially the RootsWeb Review > and Message Board My Notifications. Hello, Administration, I have not received mail from this list for several weeks. Is there a problem? Gracie New Zealand
Gracie wrote: >Hello, > >Administration, I have not received mail from this list for several weeks. Is there a problem? > Yes, Gracie! The problem is no one is posting to the list. ;-) LancsLife Listers, remember that in order to get mail one must send mail, so why not tell us about your connections to Lancashire? Messages about Lancashire dialect, slang, and sayings; culture and traditions; history of towns and villages; folklore; poetry and songs; food (chip butties? <g>) and recipes; and nostalgic essays are all welcome! Best wishes, Lynne List Owner PS Any time you have a problem with RootsWeb list mail, follow these steps, no matter to which list you're subscribed: - Check the Help Desk page first <http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/> to see if a problem has been posted (in this case, there is a relevant message). - If that doesn't reveal what the problem may be, check to see if you are still subscribed to the list (see Passwords <http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/>. - If there is no message at the Help Desk and Password Central indicates you are still subscribed to the list, then check your spam/message folders to see if mail is being filed incorrectly. If that's not the problem, contact your ISP. - If all else fails, contact the list admin privately (off list). If there are problems with RootsWeb's servers, remember to use the admin's personal e-mail address (in this case, lklein@mindspring.com and/or rwlist.admin@gmail.com) rather than the RootsWeb address, or your mail won't be delivered.
Forwarded with permission. -------- Original Message -------- The Lancashire Registration District was created on 23rd May 2005 by the merger of the following "modern" Registration Districts: - Burnley & Pendle - Chorley - Fleetwood & Fylde - Hyndburn & Rossendale - Lancaster - Preston & South Ribble - Ribble Valley - West Lancashire All events registered after the above date are being registered as the Lancashire District. For the purposes of family history research the original reference number and the 'old' district names will be retained. Records from the old offices have moved into a new building, whose address is: Lancashire Registration District Certificate Services Quayside Court Chain Caul Way Preston PR2 2ZP Following the merger, the District is currently experiencing an abnormally high demand for certificates. The Registrar staff are working through the orders as quickly as possible but would ask the applicant to be patient. It would help the staff if applications for historic certificates addressed to the office were accompanied by the local reference that is in use: for those registers already indexed as part of the UK BMD Project (www.ukbmd.org.uk/), this can be obtained by visiting www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

I am researching GEORGE MITCHELL and wife MARGARET in the 1851 census. GEORGE was born in 1822 in SCOTLAND and MARGARET was born in 1825 in Liverpool. GEORGE was a dock gateman and the couple lived in the Toxteth area of Liverpool. If someone can give me the page/folio number of this family, I can obtain the image for myself. Kind regards as always Syl - UK
Can anyone help with info on obtaining a copy of an inquest held in Liverpool. I don't have an exact date unfortunately but my rellie does have an unusual middle name if it was used at the time. Any help would be appreciated. Syl - UK
Dear Listers, From time to time someone on the list asks if an ancestor's house still stands at such-and-such an address. Before you ask the list, you might try a search on Google. If the address still exists, but is now occupied by a business, it may show up. :-) Best wishes, Lynne PS A link to be included in the Welcome Message?: http://www.new.ox.ac.uk/~james/bart.jpg <vbg>
Are there Withers/Weathers/Wythers on the list who might have had ancestors who emigrated to the States in the 1600s or early 1700s? I have proven to 1719 in Virginia, Surry/Sussex Counties, USA, a Thomas Weathers/Withers (d. 1744). If interested, contact me privately, please. On May 13th, 1916 my father was a sea scout out of Liverpool aboard the ship R.M.S. (L?)ongarino of Plymouth. They had an encounter with a submarine which circled them for days. Many instances firing shells at them. To make a long story short, my father said the captain of this ship was Captain Makepeace. He said their encounter occurred at Long. 7 Lat. 50, have no idea where that might be. Of further interest to me was my father saying, " The 1/4 master hoisted the "red ensign" on the fore mast". After a time they hoisted Red Burger over a Black Ball is flown from signal halyard. The ship managed to return safely to Plymouth. My father wrote this account as a young boy and put it in a bottle to throw overboard should their ship sink. He wanted his mother to know what happened to him. Any suggestions on what these signals meant or where this "Long. 7..Lat. 50" is would be appreciated. Thank you for any suggestions or help. Dear Listers, A message received from a fellow subscriber, who has given me permission to post: ". . . I am increasingly being driven mad by list messages with masses of irrelevant previous information left trailing at the end! I subscribe to several lists in digest form and it is definitely an increasing problem. <snip> I'm not sure my scrolling finger will survive the task [of reading Digest messages] unless people improve!" PLEASE keep this subscriber from being driven completely round the bend and save the sanity of your fellow subscribers and list administrator (oops! too late for her!) by remembering to snip when replying to messages. Most of you are very good at this, but some of you are TERRIBLE, despite repeated nagging messages from me. As much as I enjoy spending all of my free time sending reminders to the culprits (not!), I've decided to consider some alternatives, sooooo. . . If you are a repeat offender and fail to snip when replying to a message, prepare to suffer these consequences in lieu of thumb screws: One reminder = one week on moderation, Two reminders = continued moderation and switched to receive list messages in Digest mode, Three reminders = involuntary "holiday" from the list Don't let this happen to you! Snip! Best wishes, Lynne List Admin. PS Don't know what "snip" means? To snip is to eliminate extraneous text, replacing it with "<snip>" to indicate the entire message hasn't been quoted. When replying to a post, it is not necessary to include the entire original message (although you should include some of it, for context). Either summarize the previous post and add your comments, or include the parts to which you would like to respond and delete the rest. Including entire original posts takes up bandwidth, reduces readability of your message and, as noted, drives us crazy. Parts of the text that you have omitted should be indicated with <snip>. To do this, you can just highlight the text you want to delete and type <snip> in its place. For more information, search the web for "snip" plus "e-mail."
Dear Listers, From time to time, mail sent to me at lklein@mindspring.com has disappeared into cyberspace and has not arrived in my in-box. If you need to contact me about the list, please write to me at this new address. Thanks! Best wishes, Lynne List Admin rwlist.admin@gmail.com
