    1. [LAN] Manchester address 1921 - 36 Ducie Street, Chorlton-on-Medlock

    3. Hello all, I'm trying to locate the subject address, which was given on a birth certificate. There appear to be three possibilities: The one alongside Piccadilly Railway Station approach, but I'm pretty sure that this is not Chorlton-on-Medlock and there don't appear to be many, if any, houses on it. Off Stockport Road, on the left coming out of Manchester, about three quarters of a mile after Ardwick Green. Off Oxford Road, opposite the Royal Infirmary on, what I would call, the Moss Side side of the road. The father's occupation is given as "Member of Municipal Fire Brigade", which only adds to the confusion. I have been in touch with the Manchester Fire Brigade Museum and they have been of some limited help, but neither of us can associate any of these addresses with fire stations. At this time I believe that firemen worked a "continuous duty" system, meaning they were on call around the clock, hence most of them lived actually on the fire station premises or within a short run. So, I cast this conundrum open to the collective brain of this list. Please work your miracles as you so often do. Good hunting, Howard

    3. Replying to several people at once. Mike, Thanks for the map. This is the first one I've seen that unequivocally places this Ducie Street in Chorlton-on-Medlock. Mary Lou, Thanks for the input, but I have to agree with 'familyhistory', all of the buildings on this Ducie Street appear to have been warehouses etc, it's not until you get round into Whittle's Croft and Pigeon Street that there appear to be any houses. However, this is probably the closest to a fire station, which is why it used to be my best guess. Graham, I think that Stockport Road is just in the wrong location; sorry. My next challenge is that this address was given as the residence on the birth certificate, but the marriage certificate, two months earlier gave addresses in Crumpsall for the groom and Broughton for the bride; these are more in keeping with where the respective families traditionally resided. All other children were born in Cheetham Hill. Roll on the 1921 Census. Again, thanks for your input. Regards, Howard

    3. Hi Richard, Yes, they're exactly where they should be, in Crumpsall. This seems to be their only foray 'south of the river' so to speak. There will be some logical conclusion that I will eventually work out, the key is probably in the 1921 census. I'm hoping to be back in the UK retired in a couple of months, so I can then get down to this in earnest. Regards, Howard -----Original Message----- From: Richard W. 3. I'm not convinced these are garage doors - look round the corner in Peak Street and  you will see more of these.  Not all of them go down to ground level and there is no dropped kerb.   These are probably simply roller security shutters.  The name over the door is Ducie House and a quick trawl says that it was previously a Petticoat Factory (now converted to upmarket apartments). London Road Fire Station https://www.google.com/maps/@53.476975,-2.2317662,3a,75y,239.24h,93.09t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sCMrVQ2Tb-CA8Fcf7uirqSA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 is close to Ducie Street.   Ducie Street appears to have been massively redeveloped in the recent past and No 36 has probably disappeared under the hotels and modern living that now occupy the site. 3. In the 1960's there was a fire station off Stockport Road, on the right leaving town. It would be about the same as Ducie St in distance. I once has the pleasure of calling it out. I think there wee 2 fire engines located there. 3. Hi Howard, Ducie Street, Chorlton on Medlock, was on the west side of Oxford Road between Victoria University to the north and the Royal Infirmary to the south, and just one street south of Holy Name Roman Catholic Church on the east side of Oxford Street. An excellent period map from 1922 can be found at https://www.old-maps.co.uk The map doesn't show any fire stations in the immediate vicinity but I wouldn't read anything into that. I had ancestors living in Leamington Avenue and Brighton Street just north and south of Ducie Street and my research shows that much of that area of Manchester was demolished in the 1960s and 1970s and eventually redeveloped. I believe that what was once part of Dulcie Street is now named Devas Street.
