Hello, Before I ask the library to do a long search I am wondering if there is anyone who knows or can remember when Neville's shop in Darwen St, Blackburn burnt down. The nearest I can get at the moment is after 1962 but before 1975. I am looking to obtain any newspaper articles about the fire so obviously finding out when it happened is important. I look forward to hearing from somebody about this Regards Denise

Hi Bob --- thank you so much for solving that. Interestingly this shop 'Nevilles' was built on the site of the old House of Correction on Darwen St in Blackburn. It is known the House of Correction was there in the mid 1600s - but it fell out of use in the early 1800s. It was known as 'the dungeon'! Thank you so much for the quick responses. I would never have thought about looking for a website called Blackburn Fire History. I am going to see if I can get full articles about it now. I find it quite intriguing because at the time my mum thought it was an insurance scam. And now I read that the shop was empty of goods! Nevilles was an old shop. I remember going in there in the 1950s. I don't remember much about it but I do remember the wooden floors which presumably helped the fire to take hold! Hi Denise, I only knew about that site, because some query about a Blackburn Fire has cropped up before - not necessarily on Lancsgen. It's strange that it was empty -- that makes it look more like an insurance scam actually. I come from Blackburn and am ashamed to say I cannot remember that shop (nor the fire!) - and - yes I am definitely old enough to have been around when the shop was there! June, The shop was at the junction of Darwen Street and Canterbury Street, almost under the Darwen Street railway bridge.   Probably not surprising you don't remember it as it was well on the periphery of the town centre,and not somewhere you would pass around town. I only recall it as it was on my way from the Boulevard to Shorrock Street each morning in 1961/2. I used to wait for the tram to Darwen (where I worked) across the road from Nevell's on Darwen St. in the 1950's, but my Dad remembered actually taking glass jars to the shop in exchange for something when he was a child, and that would be late 1890's It was always regarded as a "posh" shop....... did Nevell's move their shop sometime later to a site in Northgate ????? I've been away from Blackburn since 1956......but I used to come back for visits. Regards Sheila (Fife)
