I am looking for a birth record. James Compton and Jane Gee were married in Mottram In Longdendale, Chester, 10 N0v 1833. There are no parents or birth location on the marriage document. Census after the marriage have them both born in Wigan (1851 census) and in 1861, James was born in Haskin in Lancashire. I come up with birth records for James in 3 May 1812 Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire and 28 Dec 1811 Deane, St Mary, Lancashire. Not knowing the area, which seems like it would be the best option for his birth document? Thank you for your help!! Teri, He is mis-transcribed on the 1841 census as James GOMTON on Ancestry. He Jane and eldest son John are in Mottram in Longdendale He passed away in 1869 aged 58 in Hyde Cheshire (via Cheshire BMD) or October quarter: Stockport Cheshire. Vol 8a page 11 jeff
That should have been James GOMPTON. sorry
(sent again as original too large) Teri, First of all Mottram-in-Longendale historically was in Cheshire but geographically it is to the south east of Manchester. It is not close to the town of Chester. "Chester" was sometimes used to refer to the county of Cheshire. Bolton & Wigan are to the north west of Manchester and Heskin (not Haskin) is close to Chorley which is to the north of Wigan and the north east of Bolton. Deane is a district of Bolton. I would have expected someone born in Heskin to show Chorley, rather than Wigan as their birthplace. Are you sure of the spelling of James surname - Compton is not all that common, unlike CROMPTON and I see that LDS show a Mottram in Longendale marriage between as James Crompton and a Jane Gee (AKA Jenny Gee in the notices of intended marriages). There seems to be a reference to James and Jane in this death record : Name Ann Sidebotham Event Date 30 Aug 1928 Event Place Seattle, King, Washington Gender Female Age (Formatted) 80 years 4 months Birth Year (Estimated) 1848 Marital Status Married Spouse's Name James Sidebotham Father's Name James Crompton Mother's Name Jane Gee Which appears to refer to this birth : First name(s) ANN Last name CROMPTON Birth year 1848 Birth quarter 2 Registration month - Mother's maiden name Gee District Ashton under Lyne County Lancashire Country England Volume 20 Page 114 So everything, including the 1851 and 1861 Ashton-under-Lyne censuses points to his name being Crompton. Ashton-under-Lyne is on the border of Lancashire and Cheshire, close to Stockport and is normally considered as being in Cheshire, not Lancashire. Have you considered this Wigan birth record as being close enough in time and location to be your James : First name(s) James Last name Crompton Birth year 1810 Birth date 17 Apr 1810 Baptism year 1810 Baptism date 06 May 1810 Place Wigan Birth place as transcribed Standish Gate Wigan Denomination Independent Father's first name(s) Benjamin Mother's first name(s) Betty County Lancashire Country England The National Archives reference TNA/RG/4/1171 Description LANCASHIRE: Wigan, Standishgate, St Paul's Chapel (Independent): Births & Baptisms Record set England & Wales Non-Conformist Births And Baptisms Incidentally I see that the 1861 census shows Jane (Gee) as born at "Billing" which is almost certainly Billinge, again near to Chorley. Overall there is little to suggest a birth in Bolton, however why a couple with origins around the Chorley area married and lived in Cheshire, around the Stockport area, is a bit unclear. Marriages usually took place in the bride's parish. At first I thought she was the Jane Gee, born Jan 1812 whose baptism is shown at Astbury in Cheshire ( a few miles to the south of Stockport). However that is unlikely as there is a Jane Gee still living in Astbury in 1841 and by then Jane was married to James. Jane is more likely to be : Baptism: 11 Apr 1813 St Aidan, Billinge, Lancashire, England Jane Gee - Daughter of John Gee & Ann Abode: Ashton Occupation: Weaver Baptised by: Richd. Carr Register: Baptisms 1813 - 1840, Page 3, Entry 18 Source: Original register at Wigan Archives Ashton in this case would be Ashton-in-Makerfield (Lancashire) not Ashton-under-Lyne (Cheshire). Regarding my previous post, it looks like my reference to Jane Gee's birth was possibly flawed. There is this burial : Burial: 11 Jun 1813 St Aidan, Billinge, Lancashire, England Jane Gee - Age: 13 Abode: Billinge Buried by: Rich'd Carr Register: Burials 1813 - 1851, Page 2, Entry 10 Source: Original register at Wigan Archives Which could have been the one baptised in April 1813 if she had been baptised late and in contemplation of death. However it is more likely have been : Baptism: 23 Mar 1800 St Aidan, Billinge, Lancashire, England Jane Gee - Daughter of Robert Gee & Ellen Abode: Billinge Register: Baptisms 1787 - 1812, Page 26 Source: Original register at Wigan Archives As the age would fit. So my previous suggestion regarding Jane looks reasonable. BobC
