I looked up a couple of the names. They seem to be graves with no CWGC headstone or even the exact burial place not known. I was reading the BBC News article "The Boys On The Ice" how some cemeteries will not allow a headstone to be erected without the permission of the owner of the grave even when not known (and quite possible the owner (if one alive) does not know they own it). http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-sh/the_boys_on_the_ice Martin Briscoe Fort William Ancestry DNA, FTDNA (B68554), GEDMatch (A374507) -----Original Message----- From: Penny Trueman [mailto:maudtrueman@gmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, June 5, 2018 9:44 PM To: Lynne <lklein@mindspring.com>; lancsgen@rootsweb.com Subject: [LAN] Re: Commonwealth War Graves Commission needs help Nice one Lynne Best wishes, Penny
I too read that article Martin. In these cases - I imagine that the CWGC has worked hard on this already. Not even an area of possible death/missing, coming up (so no possibility of being included on a memorial). There are research projects looking into war casualties all over the country, mainly WWI but some WWII ones. Also there was the In From The Cold project where names could be passed on for investigation and possible recognition. http://www.infromthecold.org/ Particularly after WWI there were family who did not want anything to do with the military after losing a family member i.e. did not want war grave, medals etc. Martin Briscoe Fort William martin@mbriscoe.me.uk -----Original Message----- From: Penny Trueman [mailto:maudtrueman@gmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, June 5, 2018 10:20 PM To: martin@mbriscoe.me.uk; lancsgen@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LAN] Re: Commonwealth War Graves Commission needs help I too read that article Martin. "Particularly after WWI there were family who did not want anything to do with the military after losing a family member i.e. did not want war grave, medals etc. " I cannot say 'unbelievable' but, I didn't think of that!
