I notice Wonkypedia has this on the Belleisle 'The third Belleisle was the lead ship of her class of ironclad battleship, originally built for the Ottoman Empire as Peiki Shereef, but purchased in 1876, used as a coast defense ship and expended as a target ship in 1903.' Where does it say 'Coastguard', sure it was not 'Coast Defence' which might be slightly different. In January 1881 it was guardship at Kingstown with full crew and a large number of marines on board. It was still there on 29th March 1881 and a couple of weeks later so was probably there on census day. I could never find him in the 1881 census which was odd as he spent all his life in service before and after this episode . While checking the National Archives a few yrs ago for something else just entered his name and was amazed to find a record for him . It has always puzzled us as to why he was on this ship which was sailing in the Irish sea . There is mention in this new information found National Archives / Discovery ' Collection : Records of the Admiralty , Naval forces , Royal Marines , Coastguard and related bodies . " Interested to know anything regarding joining the Coastguard . Was this a part time occupation ??? Did one volunteer ???
