From 1638 until his death, he did not appear in many records of Portsmouth, but did buy and sell a number of land lots. In 1656, Nicholas m. the widow of George PARKER of Portsmouth. In June of 1638, Nicholas became "an Inhabitant" of Aquidneck. His first land holding was in the vicinity of the Samuel & William HUTCHINSON lots, as well as other early inhabitants: Samuel GORTON, Thomas CLARKE, Nicholas EASTON, William BAULSTON, Samuel WILBUR, Richard BORDEN, John SANFORD, Thomas HICKS. I know that especially, Samuel and Thomas GORTON came from Manchester/Gorton, Lancs., and I am sure many others came from this county. Emery Battis, in his 1962 book, "Saints and Sectaries: Anne Hutchinson and the Antinomian controversy in the Massachusetts Bay Colony" places Nicholas BROWNE in his Third Category of Support of Mrs. Hutchinson, but without a reason why. But those who were expelled with her and came to Portsmouth, were from the counties of Lancashire and Lincolnshire, among others. In an effort to complete this 14-generation genealogy, I am attempting to find "our" Nicholas BROWNE's home in England. In my searches, I have found very nice Nicholases (!) in other counties, but have no proof they are ours, so I continue to search while health and age allow. Knowing that in those same years, some did come to RI from the Manchester area, is there a way for me to learn if there are any records between 1602-1616 for the birth of Nicholas BROWNE there? Thank you for assisting in finding this final important place, and date of birth of Nicholas BROWNE. Kind regards, Patricia Brown Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
