The birth entry for Joseph Thomas Battle earlier that year gives a mothers maiden name of Smith. It may be that Caroline had been previously married and then widowed/divorced and that would explain the 2 surnames, but you need to look at both the birth certificate and marriage certificate to be certain. A quick look in the census of 1891/1901 and 1911 would suggest that Thomas Battle was born in 1891, in Oldham, to Michael Battle and his wife Jane (BUCKLEY), and that Michael was a bricklayer born about 1862 in Sligo, Ireland and Jane born around 1858 in Coventry, England.
