Hi For anybody interested in Westhoughton, Brass Bands or just a good social history read - I have just obtained a copy of David Kayes book about Wingates Band, it is excellent and I really recommend it However it has caused me to have another look through all my family history photos because I have been proudly displaying a photo of my husbands grandfather John W Byers who was a trombonist in Wingates Band. We had obtained the photo through another relative, imagine my surprise to see the same photo and to discover it is NOT John W Byers as we thought - but the splendidly named Ramsden Whitwam. oops do I confess to other relatives I have passed the tree and photo onto - or do I say nothing - as one dark haired mustached trombonist looks very much like another. Am now going through all my photos, splitting the ones that I def know are my family and can name, and having a maybe pile of the ones that I am no longer confident about. Has anybody else suffered a similar fate and if so - what did you do? Sue
Sue, I have done the same thing and did inform others that the couple in the photo could be one of three possibilities, including the supposed couple that I thought it was. Then it's up to them to alter the information if they so desire. I did have a file marked "Ancestors I used to have" where mistakes were hidden away after coming clean to people :o) I do tend to admit a mistake's been made if I've committed one. This is a difficult past-time at the best of times, so it's highly unlikely that many people have got things 100% right from the get go. And besides, it's another story to add to the journey of your family tree, so if I were you I'd say what you've found out and let others decide whether they agree or not. The tale entertained me, thanks for that :O) Regards, Sally > > Am now going through all my photos, splitting the ones that I def know are > my family and can name, and having a maybe pile of the ones that I am no > longer confident about.
