Author: jessiebeamer Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/16521.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In 1939, 147a Mill Road was a hospital. It was originally built by the West Derby Union Board of Guardians as a workhouse for the poor and in 1891 was renamed Mill Road Infirmary and remained a general hospital until the Second World War when it sustained severe damage during an air-raid in 1941. It was eventually rebuilt and reopened as a maternity hospital in 1947. It no longer exists. 147a Mill Road was a pseudo-address: After 1904, registrars issuing birth certificates were instructed not to record 'Workhouse' etc as the childs place of birth should this prove detrimental to the child in later life. A pseudo-address was used without naming the institution. Apparently some registrars applied the same instruction to death certificates.
