Hello All I am making enquiries for my son-in-law, who knows very little about the paternal side of his family. His father was born in 1930 in Oldham to Catherine Borkins and Harry Garside. There may have been a brother John. Harry was possibly a gunner who was killed in WW2. And that is about all we know! Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Phyl

Hi, Phyl, LancashireBMD ( ) has two 'identical' but separate entries with parents GARSIDE, mother BORKINS - Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1930 Surname, Forename(s); Sub-District; Registers At; Mother's Maiden Name; Reference GARSIDE Alfred Byrom Oldham East Oldham BORKINS OEAS/49/247 GARSIDE Alfred Byrom Oldham East Oldham BORKINS OEAS/49/299 Possibly the birth was re registered for some reason. If the birth was re-registered you may only be able to obtain the final certificate and are unlikely to be told why the birth was re-registered There is no matching marriage recorded for all Lancashire for the period 1910 - 1940, but LancsBMD is a work in progress. I did not find one on FreeBMD either! Tact and diplomacy may be needed. Greetings, On FreeBMD, one of the birth registries is BORKINS Alfred B - BORKINS and the other is GARSIDE, Alfred B - BORKINS; both are Mar qtr 1930 Oldhan 8d 1082. Perhaps Jim was correct with the tact and diplomacy suggestion... hth David
Hi Phyl Only one birth to GARSIDE - BORKINS parentage I did not find a marriage either I found a passenger entry 2nd March 1956 Southampton to New Zealand GARSIDE Alfred B born 6th Jan 1930 136 St Thomas Rd Preston Trainee Telephone mechanic The only Harry GARSIDE who died in service in WW2 was in 1942 and aged 23 so can't be your man I suspect you will need the 1930 birth cert as a starting point to check first names, address, etc Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 25/02/2014 19:57, Phyl Stewart wrote: > Hello All > > I am making enquiries for my son-in-law, who knows very little about the paternal side of his family. > > His father was born in 1930 in Oldham to Catherine Borkins and Harry Garside.
