I am very grateful. It is most mysterious that my Carters are not there, unless of course they were too poor to have a stone. As you say they may be in Toxteth although this seems odd since there are several Carters in the area for hundreds of years going back to at least the 17th century and wills stipulating that they were to be buried in Garston. I wonder if they were buried at Childwall instead? Please do not start working on clearing weeds as I shall feel so guilty!! My illness is getting worse so please do not be offended if I do not reply to your posts. I have no connection so far to the Pownalls. What names were on the gravestones that you could read? I may be able to connect sideways through 'cousins', you never know!
