    3. Hi, Jennie, You asked about > The reference is for a Dorothy Jennie Anderton born June quarter 1914, > reference Preston district, Volume 8e page 1067. This is a reference to an entry in the General Register Office (GRO) register of births. The only way to determine what is recorded is to purchase a copy of the certificate, either from the GRO or from the Lancashire Register Services. There is another index which is based on the original Registrar's register and so will have fewer transcription errors. It is available at http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/index.php This has the entry - Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1914 Surname, Forename(s); Sub-District; Registers At; Mother's Maiden Name; Reference ANDERTON Dorothy Jennie West Preston Preston ANDERTON WP/17/71 If you follow the instructions, you can order this certificate on-line. The fact that the mother's maiden name is the same as the child's surname is often, but not necessarily, an indication that the parents were not married. You go on to say - > There is apparently another daughter born two years later, but I can find > no trace on FreeBMD. You can search LancsBMD by Surname alone and I would suggest that "two years later" is taken as vague and that you search 1915 - 1917. If the mother's circumstances have not changed their are two MAYBE births with mother's surname ANDERTON. You will need to apply your knowledge of the family to make a decision about further action. Hope this helps, Jim Lancaster (Bury, Lancs.) -----Original Message----- From: Jenny Anderton Sent: Tuesday, March 25, 2014 9:52 PM To: LANCSGEN@rootsweb.com Subject: [LAN] I'm back
