The Preston Chronicle newspaper, 16th November 1878 reported the death of a James Singleton, aged four years and ten months, the son of Mr.Thomas Singleton of the Engine Hotel, Skelmersdale. Thomas Singleton presumably was then the owner of the hotel. Thomas Yates and family occupied the Engine Hotel at the time of the 1881 census.
