    3. Hello Listers, Anyone else had trouble with name changes on birth certificates. Look at this for an example. My Great-Great Grandmother Mary Badger b1840 married John Cox 1868 then Henry Phillips 1886, then Edwin Wright 1890. She had a daughter Mary Badger born 1859 so base born I suppose (my Great-Grandmother of course) who married Alfred Lloyd in 1880. They went on to have 18 children according to the 1911 census and I have purchased a few birth certificates, but here's the rub, so far I have 2 birth certs with the mother as formerly Cox and 4 with the mother as Badger and also one with the mother as Fellowes. They all have the same father Alfred with the same occupation living in the same street but with different numbered houses except for two that share the same numbered house but different years 1883 & 1889. One of the children has Mary Phillips as informant on his birth certificate 1889. So my Great Grandmother gives her former name at the births of several children as one of her mothers married names, and I have so many to get yet, and on top of that did G-G-Grandmother marry again as Mary Cox in 1871 to Richard Fellowes I have found a marriage that says she possibly did and therefore the other birth certificate is correct as well. I started to buy these certificates in 2009 and have only just worked out what has happened, bewildering. Mary I need to buy another marriage certificate.

    3. Hi Mary, I'm having similar trouble with 3 generations of Vickers ladies who don't seem to marry (although sometimes on the census they are single and other times widowed). Their ages also fluctuate as does place of birth, but they are always together, up to 4 generations at once. The last generation of the 4 is Mary who marries 1st husband Edward Beadles as Vicars, and 2nd husband John Thomas Partington as Vickers. ( i think this was done bigamistly) To be honest, I think they could provide whatever information they wanted, and it was ok back then. 3. Thanks Lesley for your best wishes, indeed it has been a struggle and it will carry on for a while yet, buying certificates has got very expensive so I will take it slowly. And, Hi Susan, your struggle does sound similar and you saying they did want they want sounds right, trying that today would probably have you ending up in jail. Best of luck to you. 3. Hi I have a similar situation. My great grandmother used three different maiden names on the birth certificates of her 16 children. Unlike yours there was only one marriage. The names she used actually helped me confirm her whereabouts on the various census records. She was born illegitimately and her mother later married so that gave two of her surnames, the third came about because her mother, my great great grandmother was also illegitimate with a mother who also married some time after the birth.
