That happened with one of my ancestors too. She was born illegitimate in 1823 and her name was Hannah Smedley (her mother's surname) then her mother married a David Williams and then Hannah married and on one of her children's birth certificate her name was given as Smedley and on another was Williams so I suppose she gave whatever name sprung to mind when registering her children's births.
