Sadly, the closing of libraries is being carried out by many local authorities. Herefordshire to its shame has closed every single one apart from the one in its county town. But it is not happening everywhere - Derbyshire for instance has not attacked its libraries in any way. In the grand scheme of things, libraries cost very, very little but are also a massive social asset in so many ways. However, they are a net expenditure and so always in the firing line for cuts. They are to my mind a pinnacle of a civilised and caring society which values culture, literacy and education but, with philistines and barbarians in control what can you expect? Michael Green
