    3. I am researching this family for a friend and need to ascertain the correct Eleanor as Johns mother. On Johns Queensland, Aust death certificate, which I have bought, it states his mothers name was Eleanor Fitzhugh. One of his sons used Fitzhugh as a middle name. John Walton born 1854 in Salford Lancs was as far as I can see, the 6th child of Thomas Walton and Eleanor. After much searching on Find My Past, the only marrige for a Thomas Walton to an Eleanor in the right time frame is to Eleanor Moses, on the 17 June 1841 at Walton on the Hill, Lancs. This was a transcript in FMP from Family Search England Marriages, 1538 - 1973. Her father was named Robert Moses and Johns was Thomas Walton. I found the GRO registration of that marriage. 1841 Q2, Vol 20, P 683, West Derby, Lancs. I had wondered if Eleanor Moses was previously married and her maiden name was Fitzhugh, but found a baptism for her as Eleanor Moses on 20 Jan 1820 at Brampton, Cumberland, England. Her parents were Robert Moses and Ann. Thomas 35 and Eleanor 33 in the 1851 census, were at Cow Lane, Salford with children Jane 8, Robert 3 and Thomas 6 months. In 1861 they wee at 7 Nangrew ? street Salford, with Jane, Elizabeth, Robert, Thomas, James, John 7, Mary, Maria and Henry. All the family were matked as born in Salford. I am hoping someone on the list might have these people in their tree, or perhaps give me some clues on finding Eleanor Fitzhugh. Thanks, Nan Bailey Ningi, Qld, Australia

    3. Hi Nan, Further information from the Original Marriage Cert., states Father, Henry Walton was a Tailor and Robert Fitzhugh was a Bookkeeper. Both parties were of full age and single, Thomas was a Warper. Both signed the Record with an X.......Witnesses were Ralph Whittaker (Xmark) and Thomas Gorse (appears on more than one record) Minister William Marsden, Vicar. 3. Nan Whilst Robyn has provided you with the answer they haven't explained where the information came from. Unfortunately the certificates in the UK are not as informative as those in Australia. One of the problems with family history research these days in the UK is knowing which of the two major suppliers Ancestry or FMP has the original records that you want to see - after all it is the original copies that we really want to see not a transcript. It is up to each archive to sort out their own deal with either of them. For the majority of Lancashire they have all gone for Ancestry. So you have collections for Liverpool, Manchester, Preston (mis-leadingly known as the Lancashire collection) Then of course you need to know which archive to look in. For this I find the maps on familysearch extremely useful. No link from their main site so use http://maps.familysearch.org/ if you search on Eccles and look at Eccles, Lancashire the pop has lots of information including the fact that it is in the diocese of Manchester. You can then search the "Card Catalogue" on Ancestry Regards John Hanson Researcher, The Halsted Trust Website - www.halstedresearch.org.uk -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Robyn Clarke via Sent: 22 November 2015 01:13 To: 'Nan Bailey'; [email protected] Subject: Re: [LAN] John Walton 1854 Salford, Thomas Walton c 1818 Manchester and Eleanor Fitzhugh Hi Nan, Further information from the Original Marriage Cert., states Father, Henry Walton was a Tailor and Robert Fitzhugh was a Bookkeeper. 3. Thank you so much Robyn and Christine for your super fast responses. It certainly looks like the couple I am after, which is great. I hadn't thought of searching for Ellen instead of Eleanor, though I should have. Now to go through and find them in the census' . I would have liked my friend to buy John Waltons birth certificate, but not being a genealogist, she cant see the point of sending the money. Thank you both again, and all the best in your research.
