A SHAM DETECTIVE. At the Manchester City Police-court, HENRY CUMMINGS, who described himself as an engineer, has been charged with having falsely represented himself as a detective. During the past three months, the prisoner had been repeatedly seen about the platform at Victoria Station, and generally at night. Some time ago, the night station-master asked him his business, and the prisoner, producing a pair of handcuffs, replied that he was a detective in the employment of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company, having come to Manchester from Barnsley. After that the railway officials believed that he was what he represented himself to be, till one of them asked him to produce his warrant card. He was unable to do so, and was then given into custody. In defence, the prisoner said that whenever he had been at the station it was only as a passenger.
