I have ued Legacy Family Tree and RootsMagic. Both have free versions and both are very good programmes. However, I have always liked Family Tree Maker the best because of the ease of adding individuals to the tree. I do have my tree online at Ancestry, but it is private. I once tried to download my ancestry tree and I found that the formatting of the notes was all lost. I had extensive notes on some people including census records, Wills, and other items. While I had several paragraphs of notes, the information downloaded as one long run-on sentence. Perhaps they have solved this by now. When adding images to the Ancestry tree, I always download the image for myself as well so I always have it for those times when I may not be a member. I have my tree online to help others or to find people who might match mine, but my main database is always offline.
