    3. Hi Listers—I’m one of the lurkers on this list. It’s one of the few lists that I still subscribe to and actually get email from. I do scan everything that comes through just in case it’s info I can use. I’m also on Facebook…lots of my life splat out there. For pure research, Facebook is useless. However, I’ve connected with distant cousins I’ve never met and gotten to know them via Facebook. I subscribe to a number of groups and pages. The Facebook group Technology for Genealogy is great for keeping up with what is developing for researchers in the tech world. I use RootsMagic and there’s a Facebook group that has provided a host of hints and solutions I might have otherwise missed. I also subscribe to the Facebook page for a genealogy society I’ve been a member of for 20 plus years. They publish bits that allow me to keep up with what’s going on in Illinois (I live in Florida). So, while I can agree that Facebook is pretty useless for individual research, there are a host of other things that make it useful and worth the time and effort for genealogists. Twitter is the same thing. It moves fast but you can catch wind of developing info/events/etc. as it streams by. I’m still trying to learn to use Twitter effectively. It’s a struggle. I do talk about listservs to younger researchers so they are aware of them. However, with listservs all but dying, it’s kind of a lost cause. That being said, I do appreciate the diehards that keep this list going. I am scared stiff of Facebook - I'm not a member nor do I intend to be in the foreseeable future. It is sad though that Forums and Lists are not as lively as they once were. This subject (Quiet Mailing List) has inspired me -- and I will shortly post a message about something I have just discovered. I will post this in the hope that others, like me - were unaware of this info and it may help someone (I'm just trying to build up the anticipation now!) I fear that the next generation of researchers will do it on facebook –  the ones I belong to are really lively. BUT, searching for that elusive ancestor is a NIGHTMARE on facebook as messages vanish into thin air after a day (or so it seems to me) Am I just being a luddite ?  Lots of folks seem to go straight for Facebook and I don’t  think it’s a very efficient way of doing FH Fiona :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: Buy or sell family research items on the GEN-MAT-UKI mailing list.  No fees!  The list's administrator can be contacted at [email protected] :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: :-+-: Buy or sell family research items on the GEN-MAT-UKI mailing list.
