It appears there is another Moss Side. I did a Google search and located the following. | Reference: | R 383a/5 | | Description: | Name: Allen, John Address: Moss Side, Ulverston, Furness, Lancashire Occupation: Yeoman Contents: will | | Date: | 1829 Feb 19 | | Held by: | Lancashire Archives, not available at The National Archives | | Language: | English | I have the name BIGLAND running in my family, sometimes used as a first name or a middle name. It helped me track down other branches as their surnames changed. Eventually, I pinned it down as the surname of my 5x great grandmother who was married to the vicar John GIBSON of a church in Lytham. from 1750 to 1800. From this I found she was from the north west of Lancashire and the family had a hall named after them. Bigland Hall. I suggest that your family wanted to keep the name Moss Side for possibly the same reason. Its a name that was important to keep alive. My Bigland's are connected to the PRESTON'S. The PRESTON's got their name from the city of Preston. But for me that needs more research. Kind regards, Mike MorrisToronto Canada
Thanks to both of you. I did look at genuki and was surprised at so many Moss Sides. My relatives were Mariners so I think I should have a closer look at the Moss Side of Ulverston as per Mike's email. It never seemed feasible that there could have been a Moss Side family name but as Mike suggests it could have been from several previous generations which in turn may lead to a slightly different spelling. The paternal side of the family came from Scotland to Ulverston about 1816 which could toss many more options into the mix. Interestingly enough the only reason I found this branch of my family was through my uncle's middle name of Pernie. At that time nobody in the family knew the significance off for it but with a little research I was able to find my Ulverston connection. I certainly will look closer at the Moss Side name. On the hunt once again thanks to the Lancashire List. Noreen > On Feb 9, 2016, at 8:36 AM, Mike Morris <[email protected]> wrote: > > It appears there is another Moss Side.
