Thank you for all your info. Perhaps I did not type my follow up question correctly and was in too much haste. On March 13 you sent me the following information and I wanted to know how I should cite the source. Here is what you sent on the 13th: 2 George Henry Morgan married Mary A H Elderkin at Chorlton on Medlock registry Office 1884 How should I cite this? It's interesting that he would have wives with similar names, but then, my grandfather and his brother both married women named Maud and Maude ( one with the "e" and one without ) and both married in 1909. Come to think of it, I was reading some old letters written by my grandfather recently, and I came across a reference to an Ellen Hunter having passed away. I'll dig it up and take a closer look. Seems he may have known about her, although the name on the grave is definitely Eleanor Hunter, so we likely have two spouses for William Leyland Hunter. I never did have a maiden name for Eleanor, nor do I for this Ellen Hunter either. It might explain the William L Hunter attending at Eleanor's death in 1924, but I wonder why he would be there, as it would not have been his mother? By the way...you seem to be able access more info than I can through Ancestry. I have a World membership but you appear to be able to get better details. Maybe I just don't know how to use it all that well. I bought the Family Tree 2014 that syncs with it, but the interface is way different from the Ancestry on-line version, so I'm really struggling with it. My great grandfather William Leyland Hunter, bn June 3 1844, 18 St Ann's Square, Manchester, to John Hunter (tea Merchant) and Alice Southam. He had a brother named Edmund Southam Hunter who was a couple of years his senior, so that would fit. I notice there's no age listed on William L Hunter in the 1881 census? My GGF William Leyland Hunter traveled to and from China many times and lived in Hong Kong for some period. He had three children that I am aware of...George ( 1874 ) Tobias ( 1877 ) and May ( 1879 ) all of whom were born in either Hong Kong or Kowloon. To my knowledge he left his family to do business from Foo Chow and later returned to England where he passed away in 1894. He is buried at Tooting, England. His son Tobias added his mother's name to the tomb stone when she passed away in 1924. A puzzle exists on her death certificate...as it lists her as Eleanor Hunter, widow of William Leyland Hunter, but in the box "Present at time of death" it lists "William L Hunter, son " There is a possibility that when he returned to England he may have taken a second wife or partner and had more children. I did find a census listing a wife Ellen and two children William L and a girl Evelyn. This was likely the 1891 census and William Leyland Hunter died in 1894 I doubt that my grandfather would have added anyone other than his own mother to the grave stone, so this remains a mystery for now. Anything is possible and it would certainly explain the William L Hunter who was present at the time of death for Eleanor Hunter. The other possibility is that Edmund Hunter (his brother ) had a child William Lionel Hunter, so??? Maybe Ellen and Eleanor are one and the same and he took up with her again on his return to the UK, having more children before is early death. He was only 49 when he passed away so I suppose it's quite reasonable that this could be the case, but there was certainly no mention of the possibility by any other family members over last 100 years. I sure appreciate the help of you folks who seems to have better access abilities than I do. I've been searching for about 12 years now and making slow headway. Sometimes it's been a few years between snippets of info. It's all very rewarding when a discovery is made and certified. The 1911 census also says he was a boot repairer-perhaps he was learning the skills to do this job and then returned home to Essex? Born around 1878, have you found him on 1881, 1891 and 1901 census? Try the link to the schools web site...yes it is still there. The site is interesting reading and there is a section on its history.
