My Mary Ellen Worden Frodsham came to Canada in 1911....and had a huge family here.. and a ton of them are in Ottawa, Ontario right around where you live....so you are not alone. Just look up the name Frodsham and you have family...even if distant. And since Mary Ellen Worden Frodsham and John Frodsham had 9 children and all them had families there are even more . If you want to contact me pls do so. My Mary Ellen was an only child.....so she was easy to find in the books. Not so her husband john frodsham and others whose names keep repeating themselves and it gets confusing. Hi Ann Thanks very much for your message. Consider posting on the Lancashire message board (http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/mb.ashx) about the picture and attaching a copy of the file to your post. Then we can all take a look and perhaps provide some more clues. In this picture there are approx. 60-70 children. The majority which are girls are all dressed in light coloured dresses and are all holding bouquets of flowers. One of the girls is wearing a crown. There are 2 ministers in the back of the group plus a few women. Behind them is a building. I have no names for any of these people (only my grandmother) but am willing to share the picture in hopes that someone would be able to find a relative (plus tell me if my grandmother's 2 brothers are in the picture and where and when the picture was taken). > >Ann

She was born in 1833 in Cheadle Bulkeley. I'm trying to trace her family back. I've found that her father was born in Reeth, Arkengarthdale in Yorkshire in 1800, and in the 1851 and 1861 censuses his wife's name was Elizabeth. However the only record I can find of a Robert Garbutt having the children named on the censuses was with a wife named Harriet (or Harriott), so presumably she died and he re-married. I'd love to be able to go further back than this, so if anyone can help I'd be grateful. The 1841 census would be fantastic, but I can't find it. But I want to ensure that this is the William I have been following as there are so many William Holts! I know my Williams birth year, occupation and address, if it states these in some form on the church marriage record I know that it is definitely my William and can purchase the marriage cert. However if I purchase a marriage certificate blind and the name of his father is not on it or it is not my William I would have wasted £20! The only way for me to be partly sure that it is the William is to find the parish records relating to this marriage. Thus was hoping that if per chance a local enthusiast were visiting Rawtenstall Library in Lancashire or looking in the Manchester Central Archives for their own research then they would kindly have a quick look for this marriage for me. I cannot understand why these records are not on Ancestry nor on Lancashire Parish Clerk Many other churchs in the immediate area are. Many thanks anyway Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The "Catherine Coutes" name, is one I have never heard of before, and yet there it is. There is nobody who could have known that info here in Canada except my mother, who was the daughter of Tobias Hunter and would have given the information to the authorities when he passed away. It's possible that he could also have had a birth certificate that we were unaware of. In any case, this brings up new roads to explore. In 1887 when William Leyland Hunter married Ellen Johnston, and the year of the birth of a daughter Evelyn ( Eveline) Ellen Hunter, my grandfather would have been 10. He told me that he was left to fend for the family at a very young age and began work for Jardine Matheson at 14 or 15 years of age. His brother George would have been three years older but his sister May would have been only 8 so they would have had a struggle. He told me he was passed over for many promotions because he was considered a "local boy" having been born in HK. The company favored those born in the UK proper, even though he was British, the "born in HK" stigma was difficult to get past. It was this that finally caused him to leave JM and move the family up to Shanghai, where he prospered until the Japanese occupation. I now have an idea that my grandfather knew not only the whereabouts of his father, but also of the later children by Ellen Johnston. It may also explain why he would have taken his two daughters to the gravesite in Tooting. I had assumed that the "Eleanor Hunter" on the stone was his mother, but obviously not. I would have thought there may be no love lost between his and his father, which is why I assumed it was his mother that drew him to make the visit. More questions! There is reference by my GF Tobias, of an Ellen Hunter of Hong Kong, having passed away in 1944. The paragraph writtten in a letter dated in 1946 ended with the sentiment "poor girl" so I am thinking that he may have been referring to Evelyn Ellen Hunter. She may have gone out to the far east as she may have had some connections there due to her father's dealings. Seems every mystery solved, produces a new set of puzzles to work on. Many thanks for all your help. Brian Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am renewing my research of the surname BERRY in the Roeburndale and Wray area of Lancashire near Melling. I'm looking for information on the following BERRYs and their wives. Richard BERRY born in 1821 who married Margaret CLARKSON in 1848 John BERRY born in 1775 who married Mary DILWORTH or possibly Mary HOWSON in 1802 Thomas BERRY born in 1733 who married Grace SHARPLES in 1761 Paul BERRY who died in 1784 and had married Anne PHILIPSON in 1730 Thomas BERRY who died in 1724 and had married Elizabeth ROBERTSON in 1679 John BERRY who died in 1682 and had married a lady by the given name of Margaret. All the information I have accumulated on these names to date seems to come from the geographical area of Lancashire around Roeburndale and Wray. Thanks for your help. Darrel Walker Minnesota, USA

John HUNTER having married Alice SOUTHAM in 1839. He had at least 2 brothers - Edward Southam HUNTER (1842) and Samuel Southam HUNTER (1848) The family don't seem to be on UK census after that, so maybe they are in Hong Kong. Tobias Hunter is born in Hong Kong on 18th Sept 1877 - on his death record in British Columbia in 1970, his parents are named as William Leyland HUNTER , a tea dealer born in Manchester and Catherine COUTES, born in Hong Kong. There is no marriage record for William and Catherine in the UK, so they may have married in Hong Kong. William Leyland HUNTER married Ellen JOHNSTON in London (Holborn) in 1887. Ellen/Helen & Eleanor are often interchangeable names. Ellen was born about 1855 in Carlisle. The marriage certificate will see whether William describes himself as a widower (if he claimed Catherine had died). 2 more children arrive - Evelyn Ellen HUNTER in 1887, and William Lethbridge HUNTER in 1891. In the 1891 census the family (William, Ellen & 2 young children) are living in Bloomsbury, London - he is described as a China Dealer. There is no sign of his other children (did he leave them and their mother ? behind in Hong Kong) In 1893 William Leyland HUNTER goes bankrupt - with debts of £7,306 and assets of only £40. He is described (in The Times newspaper) as a commission merchant dealing in tea. William Leyland HUNTER dies on 8th March 1894 in Tooting , London and leaves his wife Ellen £18. In 1901 & 1911 Ellen HUNTER, a widow, is a lodging/boarding house keeper in Bloomsbury. She dies in 1924, and her death is registered (in the name Eleanor) by her son William Lethbridge HUNTER. I hope that helps sort things out. Antony Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello, Can anyone help block my BAMBER logjam? I need further information on Margaret BAMBER, probably b. Manchester. She was married to Michael DOWNS (b. Dublin) at Manchester Cathedral on 26 May 1849. According to her marriage certificate, her father was William BAMBER, a soap maker. Her address is given as 7 Fair Street Ancoats and Michael's was Chapel Street, Ancoats. If age on certificate is correct, she was born 1824/5. She and Michael had at least 4 children: Joseph, Maria, Margaret, Elizabeth. All help/leads gratefully accepted. Thank you. Michael Green
