I have the Ellen melody/meladey birth certificate and wedding certificate. Ellens father is Patrick melody and mother Margaret Clarke. This explains the Clarke a bit but I am still struggling. I cannot find Patrick melody or son john at all and I cannot find any parents for Arthur and I am also wondering if this Margaret is the Margaret married to Arthur. However, Arthurs Margaret was formerly O'mara so no idea where that comes in? Also, to complicate issues more, my dad has found a slip of paper that came from my granddad and it has leo Clarke/o'hara wrote on it. I am thinking this might be one for Jeremy Kyle! If it is true that George Henry Morgan married this Mary Elderkin in 1875 and not 1884 as the other contributer stated than it is not my George. My George Henry was born from a well to od family in1865. even 1884 might have been pushing it. I thought George Henry would be an unusual name in England, but it seems not. If you are sure the marriage was 1875 then I will look elsewhere for his wedding. With best regards, Neil Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: ClDunne27 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52702.1.1.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks Adrian for this info. Yes unfortunately I am unsure of Williams father name so do need to go on other information to get as close to a match as possible. I am familiar with ordering marriage certs but I usually go straight through the registers offices rather than Lancs BMD. This can sometimes help in identifying an ancestor, but I do prefer to track down the parish record first. Fortunately my ancestor, William, has been pretty consistent with all of his information on his census giving accurate age (born 1807), place of birth (Newhall Hey, Rawtenstall) and occupations (Fuller/Grocer) on the censuses and matching occupation and address both on baptismal records of his children and census records. He first got married in 1828 to an Ellen Holden. His fathers name was not on the records. Fortunately I think he married again to Mary Hoyle in 1858, but I need to verify that it is him marrying Mary Hoyle and not another William before I go looking for a cert. Getting a cert when you are living in Ireland is slightly more troublesome then getting a cert when living in the UK. It can be done, but it is more expensive and you often cannot talk to someone before you purchase it to determine if it is definitely the ancestors you are looking for. (Hence it is great when you come across a really helpful person in a registers office) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ClDunne27 Surnames: Holt & Hoyle Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52702.1.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Totally agree, it is expensive and time consuming with subscription fees to online resources and buying certs for records etc. I only go looking for a look up when I reach a complete dead end in my tree. William Holt is a dead end, as I cannot determine who his father is without an accurate record, I have possiblilites but hopefully this marriage record will give an accurate answer. Or I could be completely wrong and have the incorrect William. I think my William Holt married Mary Hoyle in 1858 at St Mary's in Rawtenstall. It was his second marriage, he was a widow. He was a fuller for most of his life but changed to a grocer in later years. (His first wife Ellen was a grocer so I am presuming he took over her trade). William was born in Newhall Hey, Rawtenstall in 1807. (Not sure of parents - possibly Richard & Mary). But there are so many William Holts in the area I have to make sure that this is my ancester. I am hoping that the Rawtenstall records still survive as so many it is in the area have been transcribed and these haven't . It states online that they are in the Rawtenstall Library on mircofilm or in Manchester Central Library Archives but I have no idea what condition they are in, if even readable. BTW I would definitely want to get involved in transcribing, I have a great interest and love for old documents and the history/mystery behind them. But maybe when I am retired - At present I am a full time working mum with three kids (one only 3) and live in Ireland. The latter is the major hinderance as I do not have any access to physical records, so unless they are willing to send over the records to me (which I doubt for fear that they would be returned with little painted hand prints on them!) I am not able to get involved at present. Also even when buying directly from the source a certificate, by the time the exchange rate and postage set in, can cost around ?20. If you live outside of the UK it is more expensive. But I am not foolish enough to waste money on getting a certificate when I am not sure if it is the person I am looking for! It is buying blind. Like buying the contents of a tin and you don't know what is in it. If the parish record exists I would prefer to verify the facts then buy the cert. Thanks for getting back Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. In that case I'm not certain how you *can* be certain you've got the right certificate given the fact that age, address and job can all be dodgy on certificates. And don't think that a marriage certificate with no father's name is useless. The name is only omitted if the person is illegitimate so an omission tells you that fact. Author: adrian_bruce Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52702.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Certificates ordered from the GRO costs £9.25. Those from the local Register Office (Preston in this case) via LancsBMD cost £10. Ensure that you have the correct reference in either case - GRO refs are no use to Preston, nor vice versa. In both cases it is possible to request that the certificate is only issued if certain extra details match. So far as I know, in both cases, if the match is not exact, the certificate will not be issued and you will not be charged. So you can say: "Only issue certificate if father is X, age of groom is Y /- 3y". Don't specify the address - people move. Ditto occupation - people have different names for jobs. Beware of ages - people lie about their age. If you order through Lancs BMD (£10 but you may get a photocopy of the real signatures) then print the form off and write the extra qualifying information somewhere on it (as the form suggests). Don't try and order electronically since there's no way of adding the extra. (Or rather, there isn't if you do it via Cheshire's system so Lancashire may be the same). If you order through the GRO (£9.25 but you won't get the real signatures as it's a copy) then I'm not totally sure how to add the extra qualifying information. I THINK the secret is NOT to enter the GRO reference but to request a more general search (except you can specify the exact names, year, place, etc.) along with adding in the extra info of father's name, etc. In both cases, the check will be for exactly what you write - if you request a father's name of Thomas (say) and it's written as Tom on the certificate, you will not get the certificate. (Half a dozen people will now write in to say they did get it!) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: alanpinder_1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52683.7/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Neil , The site you should be looking at is :- www.lancashirebmd.org.uk . This is site that gives births , marriages and deaths for the whole of Lancashire from july 1837 , unlike freebmd it gives where the marriage took if it was a protestant marriage , or will say registry office or registrar attended if the church was roman catholic. It also gives a reference number if you wish to order a certificate. Chorlton upon Medlock was part of lancashire until the government changed boundaries , but should be ok for the period that you need. Have a try at searching , one that I found was a marriage of George H Morgan to Ellen McCarthy in 1889 at the Reg Office in Chorlton. As it is a Reg Office the only way to be sure is to get a certificate or maybe look at the following english census of 1891 to see if that helps. Let me know if I can be of any further help , the church records for all the manchester ones are held at the record office in manchester. Alan.
