    2. Hi Robyn Many thanks for the look up on George Hansell. I don't think the one marrying with father George Ellis Ancell is mine. His father never had a middle name. I will keep it on one side though, 'just in case'. I do have a George Hansell sailing for Quebec on 6th May 1913, trade, labourer. I have medal records for WW1 of George Hansell in the Border Regiment as a Private. This is a possibility as one of his brother in laws was in the Border Reg. Hope you are keeping well and thanks again, Pauline

Author: elindelwolf Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52726/mb.ashx Message Board Post: B: 1828/29 in Manchester, Lancashire, England. D: March 23, 1887 in San Francisco, California, USA. Mother: Martha (Maiden name unknown) Father: Unknown (1841 census doesn't show him, and 1861 shows Martha as a widow) Siblings: Mary Gray (1832/33) and Margaret Gray (1835/1836). In the 1841 census there was a Margaret Gray, age 70 and from Ireland (paternal grandmother maybe?), but she doesn't show up in the 1851 census so I'm assuming she died. I checked Death records and found about 13 different Margaret Grays having died in the 10 years between the '41 and '51 census. So my question....my plead if you will is...does anyone have any suggestions for paths I can take? I know nothing about the father, nothing about MKG's mother's surname. I only know someone who could be his paternal grandmother. I'm at a loss and I've been particularly keen on tracing this line back. Or does anyone have any info on any of them? (I've attached a snapshot of his 'profile', if you will). I would greatly appreciate any direction or such on this. Thanks in advance. ~Luke Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. If my research on another Industrial School in Norfolk can be generalised, then boys were sent to such places if they had got themselves into trouble with the law. It was not quite a Borstall but came quite close and was designed to pull them up short and give them a trade whilst they were still young and malleable. Being the youngest of 8 may well have meant that nobody had time for him and if his father was ailing and his mother, or was she step-mother, not coping then he could well have ended up in one of these places. The lads I researched were trained as farm labourers and gardeners and were then sent off all over the country before they went on to enlist and frequently got themselves killed. All very sad like your George. Meg Galley-Taylor -----Original Message----- From: lancsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:lancsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of phodkinson@aol.com Sent: 19 April 2014 14:46 To: lancsgen@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LAN] George Hansell (Ansell) Hi, I did find George Senior in the 1911 census living at 5 Greggs Gardens, in Darwen, Lancashire. It looks like he was 'not well' and his wife filled the census form in and made a right pigs ear of it. She put down her previous name, said she was a widow, spelt George's name wrong and generally mucked it up. It was only by pure luck that I found it. George Jnr was a school boy in the 1911 census and there was no occupation given on the emigration records. I wondered if he was one of the British Home Children who were sent overseas to make a new life. I can't understand why he was in the Industrial School as he was the youngest of 8 living children, 6 others died as babies. The family seem to have been fragmented when Elizabeth died, they were scattered all around in Lancashire so may not have known that young George needed help. George Snr died in the Workhouse. He was an older father as he was 53 when young George died. Thank you for your interest, I may never find out what happened to him, I just find it so sad that he has disappeared. 3. Hi Pauline, Did you find George senr in 1911? I can't. I just wondered what his occupation was at the time as he was a labourer in 1901. Children were sent to industrial schools usually to help them out of poverty or to improve chances of employment. I had one and assumed the parents had died but that wasn't the case. Also its possible that the new wife didn't wan the child around or they just couldn't afford to keep him - just a theory!. Does the occupation of the one leaving in 1913 match that of his that you know of? regards Juliet -----Original Message----- From: phodkinson@aol.com Sent: Saturday, April 19, 2014 11:35 AM To: lancsgen@rootsweb.com Subject: [LAN] George Hansell (Ansell) While the list is quiet I thought I would put my brick wall up and see if anyone can help knock it down. My Great Uncle George Hansell was born in Darwen in 1897. His parents were Elizabeth Hansell nee Whittle and George Ansell / Hansell Elizabeth died in 1902 and George Snr married in 1910 to a Mary Wild and he died in 1918. In the 1911 census, George Jnr was in Lostock Industrial School, I can't find out why. I have found a George Hansell leaving Liverpool in 1913 and arriving in Quebec, Canada. I found a George Hansell in the medal records for Gt Britain for WW1. The name was originally Ansell from Stevenage in Herts but became Hansell in Lancashire. When George and Elizabeth had children, it depended on who registered them as to what the spelling of the surname was. If George registered the child it was Ansell and if Elizabeth registered it, the name was Hansell. Any help or observations would be appreciated.
