    1. Re: [LAN] burial places in Salford
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: adrian_bruce Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52740.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: "What happened to the non church goers?" If there was no alternative graveyard, you had to be buried in the church. Very few people would be regarded as non-church-goers in those days. Certainly not enough to be turned away at the gate. "Where would burial records be kept for the deceased?" For the church graveyards, the church kept their own burial register. Transcripts of many of them are now available through Lancashire Online Parish Clerks - see http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Salford/Salford-Central/index.html for instance. You'll have to work through to see what's there. "The deceased would almost certainly been buried as a pauper but was catholic and unlikely to be in this church yard" Not so. If there was no money to take them anywhere else, then the local CofE graveyard it was. One of the reasons for establishing municipally controlled cemeteries was the tension generated between the CofE priests who had to conduct the service and the desires of the relatives. Wise priests conducted the burial service according to the official rules (as they had to) then made themselves scarce while the Methodists got on with hymn singing or whatever. (Don't quote me for that being the doctrinal difference but it was something like that). Anyway - don't guess about Sacred Trinity but have a look at the burial details accessible from that page ( on http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Salford/Salford-Central/trinity/index.html ) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. Lynne
    3. >From Who Do You Think You Are? at http://www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com - "More than 80,000 films dating back to the early 1900s have been made available to watch on YouTube. "British Pathé has uploaded its entire collection of newsreels to the video sharing website, providing viewers with around 3,500 hours of footage to explore. "Each clip is accompanied by a detailed description of its content, which ranges from bomb damage during the First World War (above), to lighter subjects such as sporting events, seaside holidays and the rather more unusual. "'Our hope is that everyone, everywhere who has a computer will see these films and enjoy them,' said British Pathé’s general manager Alastair White. "'Whether you're looking for coverage of the Royal Family, the Titanic, the destruction of the Hindenburg, or quirky stories about British pastimes, it'll be there on our channel. You can lose yourself for hours.'" Enjoy! Lynne

Author: kevinmachell1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52740/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Does anyone know where burials took place in Salford prior to the establishing of Cemeteries. I know local churches would be the obvious place but some of these churches were only very small with very limited burial areas. What happened to the non church goers? Where would burial records be kept for the deceased? I am particularly interested in a burial 1841-1851 in the Sacred Trinity church area of Salford. The deceased would almost certainly been buried as a pauper but was catholic and unlikely to be in this church yard. There were no catholic churches in Salford at the time. The nearest catholic church was in Manchester city centre with no burial yard. So where were all these people laid to rest? many thanks kevin Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Mary Ann, however, was from Preston, Lancashire. In 1861, she is living with her children and listed as married. Another married woman is living with them. Both women are listed as head of house. I am wondering if Michael was a soldier and was off on active duty somewhere. He is back with the family in Preston in 1871. What units would have been billeted in Salford at that time?
