They were born about 1941 and 1945, respectively, in the Manchester area. They were (are) the sons of Kitty FRANKS and her husband, Keith BUTTERWORTH. The father of Kitty, Thomas FRANKS, disappeared in 1908, never to be seen in England again. I know what happened to him in the time between 1908 and his death in 1948. When he died he left behind a large American family, which today is quite extensive. I am seeking to reconnect with descendants of his English children. Hello, I am trying to find living male Taylors who can trace their ancestry to the Taylor families of Rochdale Lancashire in the 17th and 18th centuries. Ancestral forenames such as Zacharai, James, George, Richard and Edmund would indicate a link to the families I am seeking. It seems that there were several Taylor families at Rochdale, mid 1600's and later, that bore these names. There is a possibility that the ancestors of US President Zachary Taylor originated here. Finding a living member of one of these families would enable a DNA test to be carried out in order to either confirm or disprove the connection. In any event, the test would yield valuable information about one's ancestry. All or part the test's cost could possibly be sponsored. If anyone can help, please reply to the list or contact me privately. =rt_/)

The next meeting is on Wednesday May 7th at 7.30pm. First there will be a formal Bolton Annual General Meeting (anticipated about 10-15 minutes), for which we are still inviting nominations from subscribed members of the Manchester and Lancashire FHS for candidates for the posts of all officers and also committee members. Forms were issued at the last meeting and completed forms should have been returned to Secretary Mrs Barbara Owen, 47, Laburnum Road, Bradshaw, Bolton BL2 3BX, to be received in time for the meeting. If for any reason anyone was unable to do this, contact Jane Milne at (sj_milne@hotmail.com) for a copy of the form which can then be printed, completed as per instructions, and scanned and returned to Jane or any committee member. This is your chance for a shake up or provide suggestions, so please support us with this. We aim to help everyone with Bolton interests, whether you just live in the area and want to meet like-minded people, or actually want help with local research. The official business will be followed by a talk by Dr Sandra Hayton about "Victorian Cellar Dwellers". She will tell us how industrialisation forced the "Rural Poor" agricultural workers and skilled artisans away from their traditional country life to search for employment in the developing cities. They created the new phenomenon of the "Urban Poor", and Dr Hayton has some some contemporary stories to describe their new living conditions. All are welcome to attend the meeting which is as usual at Bolton Cricket Club, Bishops Road, Farnworth BL3 2JB starting at 7.30pm. A Help Desk for private researchers will be available afterwards, and all enquiries to Barbara Owen on 01204 30 9515.
Sad to say, there seem to be a lot of trees like that online. You have to be very careful what you copy. People with major errors like that never seem to reply or change anything. They don't seem to care. Hi all, I have been looking at other peoples trees also - one or two bits right but sorry to say mostly wrong. Not only are the errors very obvious but they never seem to get corrected, indeed it's clear they are just copied and reposted by someone else! I have usually sent a message with the reasons for the error and the references to the original documents and can say that I have only every had one "thank you". It's not put me off - I will help where I can, but I never take these trees as fact. Always check for yourself! researching Bebbington / Bebington / Bevington anywhere . . . Regards Sandra
I was looking at one of my ancestors in an online tree yesterday. According to the tree she was born about 40 years BEFORE her parents! The person shown as her grandfather, was born shortly after she was. In fact, the so called grandfather happens to be her younger brother. I had seen this tree before and had sent a note about it but I never got a reply and the tree was not changed. Hi Norm, You've heard of the old expression "taken with a grain of salt"? I suspect this pedigree uses the whole bag... but, as you say, there may be gems. However, I suspect there are many hours of research to be done. Just as a thought, have you played with the lan-opc.org.uk site? I entered "Richard Ashton", and got 612 hits. I then entered "Richard Ashton" with a father "Richard" and got 85 hits. Good luck. hth David

They lived at 22 Nelson St, Farnworth - the house in which my Grandmother was born. They migrated to New Zealand and then Australia about four years later. Bessie (known as Bettie) grew up in Kew/Camberwell, Victoria Australia. My great-grandmother PBO Critchley died in Forest Hill, Victoria, Australia. Hello fellow listers, Recently, I re-visited my rather disorganized ASHTON files only to discover that in 2008 I received an Ancestry.com Pedigree Chart that took my earliest known ancestor, Richard ASHTON, b. 1692 in Middle Hulton, back fifteen generations - back to 1330 AD. It lacked sources and appeared to be whatever individual amateur genealogists like myself submitted to the company. I set it aside as not being useful in any way. As an indication of how desperate I am to take my line further back, I am submitting the names and dates from this Pedigree Chart to the Lancashire List to see if anyone can add some clarity: 1. Richard ASHTON, b. 1330 Lancashire; 2. Richard ASHTON, b. 1350 England; 3. Richard ASHTON, b 1375 Lancashire; 4. Richard ASHTON, b. abt 1400 Lancashire; 5. Richard ASHTON, b. abt 1425 Lancashire; 6. Richard ASHTON, b abt 1450 England; 7. Richard ASHTON, b.abt 1460, England, d. 11 Jan 1549 (Yes, #6 apparently sired a son at the age of 10!); 8. Richard ASHTON, b abt 1500, Lancashire, d. 11 Jan 1549, Lancashire; 9. Richard ASHTON, b. abt 1523 Middleton, d. 6 Aug 1551; 10. Richard ASHTON, b. abt 1550 England, d. 27 Dec 1617; 11. Richard ASHTON, b abt 1580 England, d. 7 Nov 1618; 12, Richard ASHTON, b. 1600 England; 13. Richard ASHTON, b. abt 1625 Lancashire; 14. Richard ASHTON, b. abt 1647 Lancashire; 15. Richard ASHTON, b. abt 1670 Lancashire; 16 Richard ASHTON, b. 1692 Middle Hulton. I acknowledge that this list looks as if someone just Googled "Richard ASHTON", for whatever reason assumed that the results were beyond challenge, and submitted them to Ancestry.com where the submission was accepted without critical review. But then I could be wrong and there are gems hidden here. I would appreciate any feedback from the Lancashire List. I am ready to be told to garbage the list as useless. Sincerely, Norm Ashton (logging in from Toronto, Canada and going through life like a porcupine in a room full of balloons!)

Hi Norm, There is a birth of Eric ASHTON, mother JEWSBURY in 1921 Blackpool South, Blackpool (from lancashire.bmd). Freebmd shows the listing as Mar qtr. 1921 Fylde 8e 1066. Also, John and Lilian AGNEW are in the 1911 census in Swinton, and they have a son, Sidney, age 1. Lancashirebmd shows the birth as Pendleton, 1909, and Freebmd shows Sept qtr. 1909 Salford 8d 11. Also, the 1911 shows Fred and Florence ASHTON in Swinton, with a son, Stanley Peel, age 1. Freebmd shows Mar qtr. 1910 Barton I 8c 595. Also, please find attached the 1891 census page upon which Margaret, widow of Peter, shows up with, I suspect, all her children. The 1881 census has Peter and Margaret with 3 children and Peter's brother Thomas Jas, 12. I have the 1881, 1901 and both the 1911 census pages listed above on my desktop, so if you wanted copies, just say the word, and they will be sent. If there are any other census pages you do not have, let me know what is missing, and I'll see what I can do... ttys David dvdwmore(at)telus(dot)net

Just saw this. Unfortunately, too late for today's event, but there's still tomorrow and May 25. "Volunteers from the Northern Mill Engine Society have rescued and restored 27 old stationary steam engines - some of the engines which once powered the cotton mills of Lancashire. Our collection includes 5 engines built in Bolton, including one which is unique - the only engine of this particular type to survive anywhere in the world! Most of the engines will be running in steam on these 2 days." Hello All, It's been a while since I focused on my Ashton Lancashire roots so I think it's time to throw a little bread on the waters to see what floats back. My line begins with Richard ASHTON, b. abt 1692 in Middle Hulton in Deane Parish and moves through several generations of Richard ASHTONs in Middle Hulton and Bolton (and one in Accrington) to Peter ASHTON b. 2 Sep 1853 in Worsley, and lived in Swinton, and Salford, to two generations of Harry ASHTON, one b. 26 Jan 1888 in Worsley and the second (my father) b. 26 Jul 1913 in Hamilton, Canada. I guess I have two brick walls: the obvious one of extending the 1692 Richard ASHTON back another generation, and the second, less obvious, of discovering the siblings of my grandfather Harry and their descendants. My records of the senior Harry's siblings show: 1. Rose Hannah, b. Sep 1878, Swinton; 2. Clarissa, b. abt 1879, Swinton; 3. Fred, b. abt 1880, Swinton; 4. Lilian b. abt 1883, Swinton, married John William AGNEW on 4 Sep 1907 at the Wesleyan Church on Station Rd, Swinton; 5.Minnie, b. abt 1884, Swinton; 6. William Edwin, b. Aug 1885, Swinton; 7. Ernest, b. aby 1887, Swinton, married Blanche JEWSBURY on 3 May 1920 at the Trinity Congregational Church in Swinton; 8. Mary Ann, b. Jul Swinton, d.25 Jul 1889. With eight siblings one would think I could find some off-spring, but unfortunately, I have come up empty. I would be most thankful if anyone could provide information or leads that I could follow from Canada. I would also welcome a discussion on the likely lifestyle of my earliest known ancestor, who was either an itinerant farm labourer or coal miner in Middle Hulton. Thank you, Norm Ashton, (logging in from Toronto, Canada and going through life like a porcupine in a room full of balloons!)
