"An historic connection between one of the world’s biggest businesses and the Merseyside family that founded it has come to an end. "After 129 years, consumer goods giant Unilever, which began life at Port Sunlight on the Wirral, has bought out the shares and rights of its founding Leverhulme family for hundreds of millions of pounds. "The owner of brands such as Persil and Flora has paid £715m to buy out the shares and other rights owned by family trusts created at the time of the death of company founder William Hesketh Lever. "Later known as the first Viscount Leverhulme, William Hesketh Lever died in 1925. About 30 of his descendants will share the payout, equivalent to an average of just under £24m." Author: RobinBMc Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52772.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: You're in a unique situation here because you don't know anything about Evelyn apart from her name, occupation, and where she was living and working in 1924. Normally, you find individuals on the census by matching other elements of their life, such as birth year, birth place, and family members names but unfortunately, you don't know any of that. I think your best bet is to find workhouse records to see if they will tell you more about Evelyn. If you can find her birth year, that would be a start for narrowing down the census records. The trouble you'll have with the census is that there is a significant enough gap between 1911 and 1924 that Evelyn may have been a child in 1911 and therefore you probably can't look for her as a domestic servant at the same address. The 1921 census might tell you more but of course you'll have to wait 7 years for that. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. To answer your questions. No my nana hasn't passed. She knows nothing about her mum. Evelyn didn't stick around once she'd had her and my nana has no interest in knowing about her now and I respect her wishes Having said that I myself am still interested in finding her. I have the address that she was working at at the time so maybe I should try and find that in the census and see if the same family is still living there in 1924 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Did she marry later (in which case a marriage certificate may give her age and father's name and help work out which one she is in 1911). Do you know when she died ? The 1911 census shows George and Sarah Jane HILL living at 74, Haslingden Road, Blackburn with their children: Edwin, Thomas, Arthur, Beatrice, Harold and Fred. It is Edwin that I am particularly interested in. His birth was registered in 1886 at Macclesfield. He was buried at St James's church, Lower Darwen on 9th November 1918. His address at that time was given as 82, Haslingden Road. The burial register has an 'S' against the entry which, I am told, signified that he was a soldier. However, his name is not included on the church's war memorial and I cannot find a record of his death on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission web site which it would be if he was in the army. My interest is in finding if in fact he was in the army and if any descendants of the family are living. David Railton Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: andreakkk Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52772.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: A bit of a tricky one - Ok im assuming that your nana has passed away and so you cant ask ok In the first instance you may be able to get some records from the Manchester workhosue itslef - you might be bal;e to ger some more info on Evelyn there - there are sometimes things on line or maybe even the archives (you might be best calling them so see if its worth a visit first thought or even e mail them - im not familiar withe the records at the workhouse in manchester ) you havent manetioned WHICH workhouse - so just wondering if there were more than one not sure maybe Other than that you might have to narrow it down to Which Evelyn as there are several - and the thing is we dont know if Evelyn was born around Openshaw or not as many domestic servants came from other places not necessarily nearby - sometimes they were near sometimes they were far - a lot came from Ireland (but Howard is more local rather than too irish ) sometimes you may need to search each individual one to see what happend to them . (time comsuming) but sometimes brings up results - the other thing is we dont know Evelyns age ? but there hopefully is something in the workhouse records for her there - as if you can get her AGE from the workhouse records you might have better luck with the 1911 census - Next census , the 1922 isnt due out until 2022 - sadly - this would have the detail of Evelyn working as the domestic servant - The other thing is not not dismiss the fact that Evelyn MAY have been a married lady - whose husband had died/left but im more inclunded to think she was single - But I had a lady in my tree whos husband died and she had a child with someone else , we dont know who he is though !! I think once you have a bit more detail from the workhosue (if they have anything ) you can move on - Maybe some other researches can think of things I havent mentioned ? Good luck in your research Andrea Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Arthur Henry's father was Arthur Richard Waldren and his mother Harriet Hankin. He had a younger brother, Frederick, who died in 1921 aged 27. There is plenty of circumstancial evidence that it is the same man but I haven't been able to trace a marriage for him and would like to know how he came to move to Oldham. I am a descendent of Arthur Richard Waldren's brother, Frederick Charles. Arthur Richard lived for a period of time with my father and grandparents. It is assumed that the time frame above is correct as there does not appear to be details of the family in the 1851 Census. >From other sources the following information has also been obtained: Bridget Murphy was Bridget O'Brien before marrying James Murphy, it seems James Murphy was deceased at time of 1861 Census. There were also the following children born to James & Bridget: -Michael Murphy DOB 06/07/1835 -Judy Murphy DOB 02/04/1831 -Nora Murphy DOB 16/04/1833 Michael Murphy was married in 1857. All children were born in Ireland. It may be possible that the above family may have arrived in Wigan along with 2 brothers of James's, Patrick & Michael.
