Author: Dickinson_Chris Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52777.4/mb.ashx Message Board Post: A problem with researching early seventeenth-century genealogy is that so many parish registers have not survived, or have significant gaps. This means that even if you find a 'Nicholas Browne' in any extant register, you have no idea how many other Nicholas Brownes there were in the registers that have been eaten by mice or used for lighting fires. Making hypotheses from such fragmentary evidence is a very different process from constructing families from modern censuses or national BMD registrations. Fortunately this period has one source that could almost be called a national census - the Protestation Returns of 1641/2. These should list (at the very least) all males over the age 18, and sometimes also list females, for each parish. Many of the returns haven't survived ... in the area that I research, Cumberland, they are almost complete. I have no idea what the situation is for Lancashire. A pamphlet has been published that lists what is around (I don't have my copy at hand), though it doesn't provide any transcripts: see: http://books.google.co.uk/books/about/The_Protestation_Returns_1641_1642_and_o.html?id=WO9pBg1mPtQC Though 1641/2 is after the period that your Nicholas Browne moved across the Pond, the Returns might give you a better idea of which parishes had resident Browne families. The Returns have been filmed by the LDS, but I understand that there can be copyright problems in ordering the films in US FHCs. Also, if you are not used to the handwriting of the day, you may have difficulty reading them. The ideal at first is to find published transcripts or a county-wide index. Perhaps the Lancashire OPC has this under their belts. The other basic technique for gathering evidence about people in this period is to read lots and lots of wills, inventories and bonds. Probate Indexes are available and the actual documents will be on LDS microfilm. Even the non-propertied often get mentioned (bequests in wills, debts in inventories, etc.). His parents were farmers. His father was named Joseph or Thomas and his mother was named Eliza. Robert was a blacksmith and came to Australia in the mid 1880s. No amount of checking online here in Australia has uncovered any detail of him or his family in the UK. Robert settled in Melbourne, married a local and fathered 3 children. His house was named "Highfield" which may hark back to his Manchester roots. Colin Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Your best hope of finding any information would probably be to look at local newspapers for the town you are interested in. For the 1930s these are unlikely to be online - they should be available through the main library in the area or county archives, and via the British Library.
