Re:WEBB, HARRIS ORPHANAGE I have noticed a number of previous posts on the subject of the Harris Orphanage in Preston. My Great uncle and aunt, Frederick and Elizabeth Webb, worked there, must have been in the 1920s and 30s I guess, as my mum recalled visiting them there when she was a child/teenager. Elizabeth Webb took a party of orphans to Southport (I think) - my gran was also with the party and I have a couple of group photos of both of them with the group of children on the trip. I have no date for the pictures, I'm afraid. If anyone recalls Frederick and Elizabeth Webb, I 'd love to hear from them. Or fom anyone who has any additional information about the Harris Orphanage at that time. Angela

No Nivard - it really is Ancestry. They have the images, they just uploaded others twice. I've requested a copy from Family Search in the meantime. Hi Ruth It may not be Ancestry, if the originals have been lost, perhaps only the BTs survive As you say Ancestry are not quick at resolving issues with databases already available, mind you neither are findmypast, both appear to favour bringing new data out rather than correcting what they have already If you get no joy with a lookup the familysearch route is probably the next best avenue to try Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 31/05/2014 20:19, Numero Uno wrote: > Hi Nivard > > I'll give FamilySearch a try. > > Just for info, I contacted Ancestry when I discovered they had duplicated > some images. Hi Nivard I'll give FamilySearch a try. Just for info, I contacted Ancestry when I discovered they had duplicated some images. They acknowledged the error and put it on the list for correction. As it's Ancestry, I am not holding my breath!! Hi Ruth I would make contact with Greater Manchester records office to see if they have the missing year, it may be nothing to do with Ancestry As the marriage is on familysearch, you could order a copy of the entry from them, theirs may be the BTs Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 31/05/2014 19:51, Numero Uno wrote: > Could someone please check a marriage at Manchester Cathedral for me. Could someone please check a marriage at Manchester Cathedral for me. I need the details from the register, not the GRO reference. On 25 December 1858, William Barnett married Margaret Henderson. I am trying to find out whether this is a second marriage for William. The whole of 1858, apart from one or two entries, is missing on Ancestry. I told them about it nearly a year ago, but nothing has yet been done. Many thanks in advance. Ruth in Hampshire

The old Registration Districts of Manchester, Chorlton and Prestwich are largely in the present day Manchester District. The three births are - Surname, Forename(s); Sub-District; Registers At; Mother's Maiden Name; Reference Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1856 FRASER Mary London Road Manchester LRD/45/75 Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1857 FRASER Margaret Hulme Manchester HUL/76/73 FRASER Sarah Cheetham Manchester CHE/16/24 The mother's maiden name is not yet available for Manchester entries. There are no Ann (or similar) Fraser births recorded in the rest of Lancashire on this site for these years. The possible reasons are - 1) Birth not registered. At this time it was the Registrar's duty to record births and kit was only about 1878 that the duty of registration was placed on the parents of the child. 2) Birth registered under a different surname. 3) Birth registered outside Lancashire. Turning to her marriage, LancashireBMD has - Surname. Forename(s); Surname, Forename(s); Church / Register Office; Registers At; Reference Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1880 FRASER Annie ROBINSON William Elton, All Saints Bury CE11/4/276 A transcript of All Saints', Elton marriage register has Entry 276; 1880; William Robinson, age 22, Bachelor; Labourer; of Elton, father Peter Robinson, a Coach Builder married Annie Fraser, age 23, spinster, of Elton, daughter of Joseph Fraser, Looking at LancashireBMD for births of ROBINSON children with a FRASER mother shows only three in Lancashire between 1979 and 1901 - Surname, Forename(s); Sub-District; Registers At; Mother's Maiden Name; Reference Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1888 ROBINSON Albert Elton Bury FRASER ELT/37/87 Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1890 ROBINSON Maud Elton Bury FRASER ELT/39/92 Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1893 ROBINSON Harry Elton Bury FRASER ELT/41/77 This is consistent with your understanding that Edith Ann was born in Hebden Bridge. There is a YorkshireBMD but it is not as extensive as the LancashireBMD. Hebden Bridge is now in the Todmorden Registration District and none of the records for this district have been included in YorkshireBMD. However, Edith Ann's baptism is recorded in All Saints', Elton Baptism Register along with the three noted above - Entry; Name; Father, Mother; Abode; Father's occupation; Date of Birth; Date of Baptism 2098, Edith Ann Robinson; William, Annie; Elton; Stripper & Grinder; 27-Jul 1882; 16-Mar 1883 3479, Albert Robinson; William, Annie; Elton; Carder; 04-Feb 1888; 11-May 1888 4; Maud Robinson; William, Annie; Elton; Stripper & Grinder; 06-Aug 1890; 12-Sep 1890 528: Harry Robinson; William, Annie; Elton; Stripper & Grinder; 12-Feb 1893; 21-Apr 1893 A Stripper and Grinder worked on one of the machines in the Carding Room of a cotton mill. The record for Edith Ann disagrees with your statement that she appears on the 1881 Census. I would be suspicious of this baptism record as it is a transcript, not mine. Surely, the minister would have recognised a three year old child as not being 8 or 9 months of age!! If I get the chance I will try to check the original register. Your questions about William being dead in 1891 are probably not capable of resolution. As for Harry's father, your explanation is possible. Equally it may not be correct. If Ann Robinson recorded the birth of Harry and stated that her husband's name was William even if he were not the father, then he would have been recorded as the father. A very useful site that explains many of these queries is Barbara Dixon's (http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/indexbd.htm ). You state that William ROBINSON died in 1894 and you have found the record. Is this the death certificate? If so, where did he die and who registered the death? Have you looked at the 1911 Census for 13, Hornby Street, Bury. This property no longer exists, nor does the property in Albion street, Elton. Hope this helps, Jim Lancaster (Bury, Lancs.)
