Author: dlongway92 Surnames: MAYES Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52792/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for information on my Great Great Grandfather. I know his name was Charles Edward Mayes. He was born in 1841 (possibly 1843) in Manchester, Lancashire, England. He is in the 1861 England Census as being a boarder in the home of the Stakes family in Salford, Lancashire, England. It is believed that he came to the United States in 1865 although there is no record of that date other than him stating that on the 1900 United States Census. He married a Josephine Sniffen and/or possibly a Hester Sniffen. His children Amos, Issac, Charles Francis, Fernando, and Josephine were all born in New York, USA. I would love to find out his parents names and any siblings he may had and anything else I can. Any and all help is appreciated. I was told that he was a professional acrobat. This photo of 'Geroge' shows him in an acrobatic pose with a partner. I was doing a 'google' of 'George Evans, acrobat, lancashire' . If you think your 'George' and my Grandfather (Edward Evans) are related, I may be able to email you a copy of it. My email is 'brett665@live.com'. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ClDunne27 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52786.4.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Jim I have found quite a few records for the family. Annie's daughter Edith Ann Robinson is on the 1891, 1901 & 1911 census as being born in Hebden Bridge. Memory does not serve me well Edith was not on the 1881 census. I have found a birth record on the England births and deaths etc for Todmorden in /july/aug/sep 1882 for Edith. The baptism record in Elton is for the 16th March so I reckon that as she was under one the priest just put 0. (Hebden Bridge has puzzled me. Why was she born there? I did have a scan for relations in the area and even searched for Annie there in 1911, but have not found anything yet) William Robinson (1860)- his death record was found on www.freebmd.org.uk Bury for 1893 (not 1894 which I stated.) he was 33 years old. I have not got the death certificate yet. But there are no other deaths matching for William from 1890 to 1901 (1890 being the birth of Maud and 1901 being the census that Annie states she is a widow). There is a census record for William in 1891 living at 23 Greenhalgh Row, Bury similar birth date, occupation stripper and grinder, same birth place 'Manchester' he states that he is single. I thoroughly checked Albion Street and Hornby Street & Bury for Annie, Albert, Harry and Maud.... I'm just hoping I missed something that someone else sees. Annie's birth record is odd. I have checked other counties too. The only other answer to her disappearance is that she was born in Ireland (has lied consistently that she was born in Manchester on the census) and only came to England in 1870's (odd because the irish famine was 1855-1860 and most emigrated then). Then she took a holiday in 1911! Would love to find Harry Robinson in 1911 I think he might be stationed with he 3rd Manchester Regiment. (He is the Key.. he definitely retained strong roots to Ireland, although he was not born in there as he had a tattoo on his arm of an Irish Harp. The fact that Harry did not know his father and, although his father's grandfather was Irish, leads me to believe that Annie Fraser was Irish and this is where Harry got his love for Ireland from. Thanks for all your work and the link ,will definitely check it out. yours Clare Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: ClDunne27 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52786.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi In desperation I have tried looking under just 'Robinson' in the Bury area but nothing seems to match. There are alot of other 'Annies and Williams' so you have to be careful not to get them mixed up and follow each 'family' through the census. I have looked for just Annie, Albert and Harry without a surname too. I know that Annie is in the Bury area in 1914 as per her son's Harry's papers, I don't think she would have gone far. Unless she went on holiday! This is doubtful as they didn't have much money. She never mentioned anywhere a middle name. I thought that Annie itself might have been a middle name as I could not find her birth record i.e Mary Ann. But I followed them and got no joy. I have not searched under Nan or Nannie will give it a try. Fingers crossed it might lead me to someone. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: ClDunne27 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52786.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Yes, thanks. I posted it on the 1911 board back in January but only got one answer. It was to an Annie Fraser that I had found myself on the 1911 census. This Annie says she was 'married or apart' and was living in Chorlton the other side Manchester as a Mantle Maker with a man called Charles Kicks. Annies husband William was definitely dead before 1911 so I reckon she would have put widow down. Plus there is no mention of her children on the census, and her occupation when she worked was a cardroom operative. I don't think this is my Annie. Yes thought about the RC records and looked at what I could, but no luck. I can only see what is on line as I no longer live in the UK. There are no records of a Joseph Fraser being married in the area so no luck in determining Annie's possible mother. The Joseph I was looking at married Ann from Gosport in Hampshire!
