    1. Re: [LAN] Looking for descendants of Logan Smith or Timothy Daly both born Liverpool about 1890
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Penelope_OReilly Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52805.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank you for getting back to me. I realise my post didnt give much of what I already know! We have documentation and a recent trip from Kent to Fraserburgh found a newspaper article that solved the mystery of exactly how Peter Connell died. It told us that the 3 gentlemen had been seen walking back to the ship arm in arm (no doubt after a few sherberts!). As the harbour lights were out (due to the war) they accidentally walked off the pier into the sea. Logan Smith and Timothy Daly were saved but my Great Grandfather was later found dead. The article is really quite graphic so information has been gained. I was just wondering if anyone had links with (or could help me find) either of these men's descendants.... They would have been born around 1890 (but this is a presumption) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [LAN] A bit late for Father's Day!
    2. margaret shearing
    3. My great grandfather was Robert DUST. He was born in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire but by the time he was 19 in 1861 he was living in Crawshawbooth, Lancashire. A few years later his younger brother John joined him in Crawshawbooth. The male DUST descendants in my line came to an end many years ago but John had several sons who had sons ....... Before the brothers arrived in Lancashire there were no Dusts, so any DUSTs connected with Crawshawbooth or Lancashire will descend from them. Names descended from Robert are: LORD, BALDWIN, BUCKLEY, CHEQUER, BACON, METCALFE, HOLT, ALMOND, MASSEY, BARRITT, TRIPPIER, WORSLEY, MOORES Margaret

    3. Barbara, I can't help with where your John Greaves was born but thought you might like this tidbit (if you don't already have it) about his son John Jr. from : The Illustrated Historical Atlas of the Counties of Essex and Kent (Ontario, Canada) - H. Belden & Co. Toronto, 1880-1881 under Subscribers [page 38]: (quote) :Greaves, John Jr. farmer, has 97 acres of Lots 2 and 3, Con. 12, East Sandwich; and 30 in Maidstone Township. He came here in 1856. Is an Englishman; born in Lancashire, 1843. P.O. Address Maidstone Cross. (end quote) It wasn't too wild in Essex County, Ontario, in 1856; Serious European Settlement in this area had been taking place in the mid 1700's with inner migration of French settlers from Quebec earlier than that -- early enough that 3 of the French pioneer families rec'd their land grants from France which was still in control of the area. (still a heavy French population there). Sandwich Twp. was established in 1797; it is one of the most important historic areas of Ontario & one of the first settled twp's since it runs along the banks of the Detroit River (now includes the City of Windsor tho historically called "Old Sandwich Towne" and many old records will simply say "Sandwich"). Maidstone Twp not far from that; this area of Ontario is the richest farmland in Ontario and arguably the richest farmland in Canada. Very low lying area here and in Kent Cty where the land actually had to have dykes dug to drain what was rich and swampy lands along the lakes. By 1856 towns, villages, churches etc. were well established and having over a 100 acres of this good farmland would have made your gg grandfather & his son John Jr. quite prosperous farmers. Are family still in the area? I have a lot of folks in both counties in my database but only one Greaves (Enid). Good luck with your search. 3. The person I am thinking about is my gt gt grandfather, John Greaves, born May 29, 1808 in the Oldham area. (I have not yet found a birth record indicating exact place of birth and parents’ names.) All I know about him is from research, not from any family stories. I have never seen a picture of him. When he was married to Jane Bottomley in 1830, John’s occupation was given as “servant.” On the 1841 census and again, on an 1848 list of Chartist Land Subscribers, he was listed as a cotton carder. When he emigrated to the US in 1849, his occupation on the ship’s passenger list was given as weaver. John was 41 when he arrived in the US, with his wife and children. He quickly found a job as a foreman in a cotton mill near Poughkeepsie, New York, where he remained for 6 or 7 years. I think it is interesting that, after 15 to 25 years as a cotton worker, John moved to the wilderness in Essex County Ontario, Canada. There, at age 49 or so, and with the help of his sons, he became one of the pioneers, chopping down trees, building a log cabin for the family, and clearing the land. He then farmed for at least another 20 years. The one infirmity mentioned in his obituary, in 1886, sounds like a fairly severe hearing loss, which I assume was caused by his long exposure to the noise in the cotton mills.

    3. I remember opening the box of documents at the LRO (DDPt1 Dunkenhalgh Accounts) and finding Abraham Broadley my 6xggfather! He worked for Dunkenhalgh from 1712, at first in the kitchen, then labouring jobs. They must have decided he would do because he was appointed as the carter in 1715 and rented a messuage on Black Lane Head, not far from the big house. He was born in 1693 and I know in detail what he did from 1712 to the late 1740s. He died in 1760. Many thanks to the Petres for putting their documents in the record office. Marie

But as I can find neither her nor her father who was listed as John Blackburn on the marriage certificate. I thought I'd check the census to see who was listed at that address in 1881 and 1891 to see if that threw up anything, which is why I need to search for the specific address rather than a person. :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It is in Sub registration district of Trinity. But it changes enumeration district between the two censuses. I think it is enumeration district 6 in 1881 but around 10 in 1891. The problem is that I can find houses 1-10 and 27 onwards in 1891 and houses 27 onwards in 1881. But no mention of house 14. It must exist somewhere as they wouldn't number houses starting at 27 on a street. And I have a marriage certificate that states people were living at number 14 in 1888. Does anyone have any ideas how to find it? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [LAN] Your Lancashire father - William Herbert Mayor
    2. Linda
    3. For Father's Day I'd like to honor my grandfather, WILLIAM HERBERT MAYOR, born in Haigh and raised in Anderton at the Millstone.  He loved bowling, his brother being the famous Bolton panel bowling champion, Tom Mayor, but Wm didn't care for American bowling.  He was a machinist apprentice with the Horwich Locomotive Works.  He worked for them for three more years after his apprenticeship finished before emigrating to America for better employment opportunities.  He left his first job in the US at Bethlehem Steel Co to go to build ships for the war effort.  He never forgot his loyalty to England when the wars erupted, leaving jobs during both wars to do some sort of work for the war effort.    British machinist training was considered "the best" by American employers as can be seen in this quote from a 1919 company magazine of a ship building firm in Duluth, Minnesota.   "W. H. Mayor. Another "bloody-blarsted Britisher," which means a seven-year apprenticeship, 5 shillings a week, a 10 hour day and night school. In this instance the school was five nights each week for three years and then the young man had the grit to go through a correspondence course. W. H. Mayor, Foreman of Assembly, was that boy and his home was Horwich, Lancashire, England. He started in locomotive works and apprentices there had not alone to go through all the departments, but learned to make their own tools. In 1912 Mr Mayor came to this country. He was a foreman of a machine shop in New York and had other like positions. Four years ago he came to Duluth and was foreman of the machine shop of the Duluth Boiler Works. Nine months ago he came to Polk Street."   Arriving in the US, he went to work immediately to save money to send for his girlfriend from Adlington/Horwich.  Four months later, she boarded the ship, and they married the day she arrived.  He returned to his home in England 4 or 5 times after he retired.  He lived to just before his 97th birthday, well respected and loved by many, mentally sharp to the end.    (That great Engish machinist training accounts for so very many English machinists coming to the US to work in the cotton & woolen weaving mills of New England as well as the many other types of mills in other parts of this country.
