    1. [LAN] HANSON Family reunited with long-lost war letters
    2. Lynne
    3. Possibly of interest to some of you: >From the Bolton News (http://www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/bolton/11296177.Family_reunited_with_long_lost_war_letters/?ref=eb) - 'A FAMILY is to be reunited with letters written by their war medic grandfather after an appeal in The Bolton News. 'Dr David Marcus HANSON's relatives were surprised — but delighted — to discover Graeme KNOTT, from Farnworth, had inherited the bundle of about 28 letters from his father Robert and wants to return them to the surviving members of Dr HANSON's family. 'They were written between 1913 and 1922, many detailing his time serving on the frontline in World War One. 'Dr HANSON's granddaughter, Rosemary RICHARDSON, who grew up in Halliwell and now lives in Bath, said: "It was a total surprise. '"I knew he had served in World War One, I've actually got his silver hip flask which says RAMC (Royal Army Medical Corps). '"I did not know these letters existed. Certainly my mum did not have any letters." 'Dr HANSON was born in County Wicklow, Ireland, in August 1887 before moving to London and then Bolton, in 1913, as assistant to Dr RICE, who had a practice in Daubhill. 'He later set up his own surgery at 509 to 511 Halliwell Road. 'Mrs RICHARDSON, a mother-of-four, who lived in Ivy Road until she was aged 19, said: "I think he died when I was eight or nine. '"I have often thought about what he did in the war. '"I have got a bronze bullet that's been made into a letter opener and it says The Somme on it so I know he was there. '"He never talked about it, as far as I know. It must have been very difficult." 'Dr HANSON and his wife Isabel had one son, also called David, who had three children including Mrs RICHARDSON. 'Her brother David, aged 57, who lives in Leamington Spa, said: "There's a church window dedicated to him from the people of Halliwell because he gave a lifetime of care. '"When I was a boy, people used to stop me in the street and say, you're Dr HANSON'S grandson. '"He came to the town to develop his experience as medic. He never left, he felt a sense of duty." 'For the majority of his patients in Bolton, the 1920s were a time of grinding hardship and he relied upon neighbours to tell him when the sick, already in debt to him, were too proud to call him again. 'He died on Good Friday morning, 1964, and his patients put a memorial window in St Paul's Church. 'Father-of-two Mr HANSON is planning a visit to Bolton to collect the letters.' Lynne

There is also a Newchurch in the Rossendale Valley, which possibly comes in the Hasingden area. In the 1841 and 1851 census, Betty's birth place is given as Haslingden. And this i believe this is the St Nicholas, church, in Newchurch Haslingden. And if this is the Betty Nutter, who Henry, born 1783 married, is the from St Nicholas, then her father was a William Nutter, and her mother was a Margret Lord. Whether this Betty Nutter, is related to the Nutters of Pendle, i'm not sure. But there is a possibility. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Maybe she had married a Joseph Fitzpatrick, who left her, and when John was baptized the priest knew that, and he decided John's surname should be Fitzpatrick. His parents chose to ignore it. Registering the birth they didn't mention that marriage, and she used the name of the childs father. No problem at all, they broke no law, and John got the name of his father. Author: infosending1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/51808.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Well regardless of who was born where in this particular instance, a point worth bearing in mind with Liverpool birth, marriage, and death registrations, is that there were several registration districts within Liverpool over the years, and some of them didn't have Liverpool in their names, such as West Derby, Toxteth Park, Sefton and Sefton South, Bootle, Halton, Liverpool and Liverpool North or South. So if the name isn't too common, and especially if the approximate date range is known, if one has access to an appropriate set of BMD registration records, the easiest and most reliable way to find Liverpool BMD registration records, is usually to search for records in Lancashire and then try to spot any BMD records that contain any of the names of the various Liverpool registration districts. Father's name on birth certificate is Reuben Lucas and mother's is Bridget Lucas formerly Sheridan. I can't find any trace of John for the 1881 census. In 1891, he is listed as John Lucas living with his mother Bridget Lucas (as you say, at this point Reuben is married to Ellen Seddon). They are living in the same house as Joseph Fitzpatrick and family although as a different household (Back Canterbury Street). It was thought within our family that John and Joseph were brothers and one of my family members remembers one of Joseph's daughters/grandchildren. On the 1871 census, Bridget Sheridan was living with the Cullen family and (presumably) her children Joseph and Mary Ann Sheridan. This could be Joseph Fitzpatrick. So there's a possibility she married a Fitzpatrick at some point but all the name changes are v confusing. Ideally I'd like to get hold of Joseph's birth certificate. Looks like he may have been born in Dublin in 1859. I don't know if it's possible to get a certificate as it's before registration started. Any ideas? (Registration District - Runcorn). Both Dad and JEAN shared the same parents: Mother - MARJORIE BATE whose family owned Ford Farm, Hargrave, near Tarporley, Cheshire. Father - Baden Leslie Dawson, a labourer at the farm. Following her birth, JEAN was given up for adoption. In those days, it might have been as informal arrangement, as was my father's own 'adoption'. Jean was possibly taken in by a Baptist family, in Cheshire or Lancashire. I have read in several locations that William was a prominent physician, but I'm afraid I have a real dearth of information about that generation of the Hindles beyond their addresses in the Providence area (they are listed in numerous city directories) and the fact that Adam was a machinist, a trade that was also followed by my grandfather, Adam Jr. I do have some newspaper clippings regarding the branch of the family that moved to South Hadley. Additionally I have some photos of the Hindles from around 1924, but unfortunately nobody in the pictures is identified. If you'd care to PM me I'd be happy to share this information with you. I'm also trying to gain some insight into why the Hindles emigrated to New England when they did (and when Robert emigrated since he did not arrive on the ship with the rest of his family in 1870), and would be most grateful for any light you might be able to shed. Reuben was single in the 1881 census and a bachelor in 1884 when he married Ellen SEDDON in 1884. However, the birth registration index shows John as LUCAS, suggesting that either the parents pretended to be married or Reuben attended the registration, admitted paternity and signed the register. As Antony Marr says, the details on the birth certificate may be revealing. The baptism record actually says "known as Fitzpatrick", not "to be known as...". I wonder whether it had already been arranged for the baby to be taken in by a FITZPATRICK family. I cannot find him reliably in the census until 1911. Have you found him as a child? I see John rather fudged the issue of his father when he married Ellen PAGE by naming him as "Ruben Fitzpatrick". He also seems to have taken a couple of years off his age, both at his marriage and in the 1911 census. Caroline Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
