Sarah was 21, and her father was Edwin Emery, bricklayer. George was 19, hairdresser, father Joseph was cordwainer. George and Sarah had a son, Joseph Edwin Worthen, born 2Q 1850 in Stockport, Cheshire. He died in Ardwick in 1852; burial was 3 Dec. 1852. It looks like George died in 1862: Deaths Sep 1862 Worthen George Salford 8d 16 While the 1858 marriage record says that Ellen was a spinster, there was an 1851 marriage between a Robert Roberts and an Ellen Whitehead at Christ Church, Everton. Ellen's father was Thomas Whitehead, brewer; Robert's father was Thomas Roberts, engineer. Both were full age. I wonder if this might possibly be Ellen and might be where the Roberts in her name came from. In terms of Ellen's father: There is a marriage between Thomas Whitehead, brewer, and Margaret Lloyd at Liverpool on 5 October 1823. Marriage: 5 Oct 1823 St Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England Thomas Whitehead - Brewer, of the Parish of Liverpool Margaret Lloyd - Spinster, of the same Parish Married by Banns by: T. It seems that Jane married George Huxley, son of William Huxley (a farmer), at St John's Church, Liverpool on 10 June 1845. Jane may have died in 1907, aged 83. Mary Ellen Worthen, born 1859 Manchester, appears with George and Ellen in the 1861 census, and by 1871, she has become Mary Ellen Maddocks, and appears with Henry and Ellen Maddocks and son James, born 1866 Ireland. Henry Maddocks was born in Wales in 1844. One possible candidate is Henry Maddocks born about 1842 in Bronington, Flintshire, Wales, to Thomas and Mary Maddocks, as that family was living in Birkenhead, Cheshire as of 1861. I can't see them after 1871. Hope some of this may be useful to you. Kind regards, Rosemary Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. She was the daughter of 6. Thomas Copestick? and 7. Mary Houghton?. Notes for John Gass: Mr. John Gass Last Wednesday Mr. John Gass, a well-known and respected citizen of Delmar, died at the residence of his nephew, Mr. Charles Copestick, after an illness of about three months, at the age of 79 years. Mr. Gass had been declining in health for about two years. Mr. Gass was born at Annan, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, January 3, 1809, and he was the eldest of 14 children. As a youth he worked in his father's shop, where he learned the trade of a pattern-maker, and he became a very expert workman. In 1833 Mr. Gass was married at Manchester, England, to a sister of the late Charles Copestick, of Delmar. In 1849 he came to Philadelphia, where he got a job as patternmaker in Merrick's machine-shop. Here he remained for 17 years, and he was the workman among all the others who was entrusted with the difficult modeling and mechanical draughting. It is stated that Mr. Gass did much of the work in modeling the machinery for the Monitor, Merrimac, and other war vessels. During these ! years Mr. Gass had gained a competency, and in 1866 he moved to London, Ontario, where he was also engaged in a machine-shop for several years. There his wife died, and soon after his only son also died. Mr. Gass was offered the foremanship of the shop and its 300 workmen if he would remain at London. But being alone in the world, he decided to come to the home of his brother-in-law, Mr. Copestick, and accordingly he came to Delmar in 1871, where he remained until his death. Mr. Gass was a general favorite, and he was familiarly known to many as "Uncle John." By his gentlemanly bearing and genial nature he won numerous close friends and kept them. His word was as good as his bond, and his heart was always open to the needy and unfortunate. The funeral was held at the Stony Fork Baptist church last Friday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. A. B. Browe. John may not be the son of James Gass and Elizabeth Steel but looking at the early censuses it looks like James Gass is the only candidate which fits. However the father James was not a pattern maker as John was but a joiner. However the John son of James in the 1811 and 1821 census is the eldest of the family so that fits with the obituary above. John's first son was named James which also fits the Scottish naming pattern of children. 1841 census Manchester, Salford, Lancashire, England Canal Street Jno Gass 30 Mechanic born Scotland Sarah Gass 35 born Lancashire Thomas Gass 11 born Lancashire James Gass 7 born Lancashire Charles Gass 5 born Lancashire Emigrated to USA aboard Saranak arriving Philadelphia 30 May 1849 occ Pattern Maker 1850 census Southwark, ward 6, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA John Gafs M 40 Scotland Sarah Gafs F 46 England Thomas Gafs M 20 England James Gafs M 16 England Charles Gafs M 13 England 1860 census First Ward Fifth Precinct, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA John O Connor M 40 Ireland Caroline O Connor F 29 Pennsylvania James O Connor M 80 Ireland John Gass M 55 Scotland Sarah Gass F 55 England James Gass M 25 England Household ID: 1680 , GS Film Number: 805151 , Digital Folder Number: 004292169 , Image Number: 00310 Citing this Record "United States Census, 1860," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MX52-492 : accessed 15 Jul 2014), James Gass in household of John O Connor, First Ward Fifth Precinct, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States; citing "1860 U.S. Federal Census - Population," Fold3.com; p. 208, household ID 1680, NARA microfilm publication M653; FHL microfilm 805151. 1880 census Delmar, Tioga, Pennsylvania, USA Thomas Copestick Head M 33 born Pennsylvania Fath b England Moth b Scotland Caroline Copestick Wife F 31 born Pennsylvania John Copestick Son M 4 born Pennsylvania John Gass Uncle M Single 68 Pattern Maker born Scotland Fath b Scotland Moth b Scotland Isabel Copestick Mother F Widowed 67 born Scotland Fath b Scotland Moth b Scotland Caroline Copestick Wife F M 31 born Pennsylvania Fath b Penn Moth b Penn Housekeeper NARA Film Number: T9-1198 Page: 152 Page Character: A Entry Number: 1502 Film number: 1255198 Children of John Gass and Sarah Copestick are: i. Around the turn of the century, they moved to Manchester. For some years they lived on Ainsworth St, then Walmer St. They had 10 children, 3 of which died in infancy. Their eldest son Ernest Lewis (born 1891) was killed on 4th sept 1916, Delville Wood, Battle of Sommes, France. These were their remaining children: Annie (my grandmother), 1893-1951 - immigrated to Canada in 1923. ** Albert Robert, 1896-1953 (married Mary Margerison 1922) Harold, 1899-1973 (I've made contact with grandson of Harold but he has no info on remaining descendants.) **Charles William Joseph. 1901-1980 (married Ethel Crowther Barlow 1925) **Ada Mary, 1904-? (married George William Lomas 1925) **Florence Edith, 1905-? In that case it is quite possible that the family never mentioned her thereafter. Another possibility is that she was sent to a relative and took their name. I notice that the birth of Kevin in 1939 was registered in Hyde and there are two Muriel Ashton marriages registered in Hyde in 1959 and 1967, a possible coincidence. You could try getting copies of the marriage certificates specifying the father's name so you don't pay for a copy that isn't what you're after. Unfortunately the name Muriel Ashton is quite common. I don't know whether this helps but few people disappear into thin air without any trace. I also notice Brenda Toulson with Muriel as a family connection on Genesreunited, if this is not someone known to you they might be able to help Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. She was born in Millbrook Ashton in 1930 the eldest sister of my dad who was born 1936 and my uncle born 1939. My dad vaguely remembers having a sister but my uncle born only 3 years later has no recollection of her so she seems to have disappeared between 1936 and 1940. I only knew of her existence this year and have searched everywhere to find more details about her with no success. I really appreciate any help with this Thank you so much Julie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: flagal1953 Surnames: Whitehead, Worthen and Maddocks Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.britisles.england.lan.general/52822/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Looking for parents and siblings of Ellen Roberts Whitehead born about 1837 in Liverpool. She was married 21 May 1858 at St Thomas Church in Liverpool to George Worthen. Ellen's father is listed as Thomas Whitehead who was a "Licensed Victualler" according to Ellen's marriage certificate. Ellen married a second time to Henry Maddocks, date unknown. She had at least two children: Mary Ellen Worthen born 1859 in Manchester and James Maddocks born 1866 in Ireland. Ellen's first husband George Worthen's occupation was Hair Dresser and on the 1871 census both Ellen and second husband Henry Maddocks are both listed as Hair Dressers. This occupation must had caused a lot of moving around. Ellen was born in Liverpool, had also lived in Hulme, Southport and Ireland. Her mother was said to have been Irish. Would like to share information. Thanks. Susan Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
